Theoretical jacket idea...

Ok so this is going to sound weird really really weird. As a hobby I weave chain mail (no not emails, the medieval armor) stainless steel rings 4-1 weave 14 gauge wire. Terrible vs impact but seems invincible vs abrasion couple that over a padded jacket (yes a short sleeve is 16lbs) and it seems like a good idea but this is an idea.

I have the supplies to make a full sleeve shirt large enough to wear over a jacket tightly and the supplies to make chain mail pants (those suck unless woven with care for sizing to the individual to prevent flapping loose bits) is this an idea I should start on in the non riding season?

Epic Monty Python and the Holy Grail aspect aside, I'd HATE to have to wear a 16 lb shirt in addition to my regular gear. That would get fatiguing really fast, I think.

Plus there's the whole tank-scratching thing.

For reference, my track gear (helmet, suit, boots, gloves) totals about 25 lbs but that's spread over my whole body.

Besides the comfort due to weight and the tank scratching issue, it still seems like an idea that may at the very least provide a level of entertainment right? I might just start on it in winter

First pic. A good idea of what I have right now. Second pic. Some of my aluminum (silver and black are the only steel) third pic. Idea of ring size. Fourth pic a shirt “blank” my hand for scale. Fifth. Some belts I have leftover from last sale.

In theory yes...I’m having a hard time justifying the added weight and struggling to remove “slop” the thing that happens with chain mail it’s all floppy floppy and very very hard to get suitably tight and still be able to move.

Not sure about the moto gear aspect, but I dig that you make chain mail... from the n00b perspective anyway.

Cool stuff!

Considering I’m new at this I would imagine some much larger company has already had this idea and since it’s not mainstream I’ll probably relegate chainmail to the non moto world. Cannot imagine I’m the first person to have this thought. Lol

Maybe chain mail sandwiched between fabric layers or kevlar in order to keep it in place? Conceptually, I like the idea of chain mail but getting in and out might be challenging. Putting it with other layers could keep it in place, and in a crash the fabric would rub off but the chain mail would then take the brunt of the abrasion.

We'll give you a new title if you do. Billy Gibbons really did that once long ago, but it was a spherical steel cage instead of mail.

So if you have Levlar, then you don’t need chain mail ! Kevlar is light, incredibly abrasion resistant & easily formed & shaped as a moving cloth or a hard armour. I used to make pre-preg Kevlar for helicopter armoured seats !

If you wanted to use steel as an abrasion layer, then sowing steel cables or thin strips into a garment would achieve the same goal with less weight than chain mail. You could also used steel netting. Both are relatively light & flexible.

I’d leave chain mail for the knights, but would suggest that Titanium mail would be awesome or even 7075 alloy, much lighter than steel, just as tough & no rust ! If you laser welded the rings, it would be incredibly durable to.

YMMV

True regarding the Kevlar it does defeat the purpose of chainmail. I was almost thinking a simple long sleeve chain shirt and weaving 550 cord into the rows of rings to provide more shape and hold it tighter. I’ll start this experiment this weekend. Shirt will take 4 months to complete at the minimum

Well that's probably why no one else does it. You'd have to sell a suit for $100,000 to make it worth while.

Sure it could handle abrasion but definitely it may have the possibility of getting broken on some of the chain thus having this fragments that might puncture yourself.

But it is still a hell of an idea imo.

I know this is old, but thought is was a cool idea. What if instead of a hole suit, just patches on the parts that would touch the ground. There isn’t a ton of leather on my jacket with the stretch panels and breathable bits. I’m sure it could make a real nice mad max look.

I was reading back through this thread and was coming to the same conclusion.

Look at the Kevlar riding jeans, they aren't completely lined in kevlar, just the knees and butt areas.

What about making a riding jacket that was part leather or maybe macrame' 550 cord with chain mail in the elbows, shoulders and back?

Heck even my leather jacket has reinforced double layers in the elbows and shoulders. A leather jacket with chain mail in the elbows and shoulders would look pretty mad max.

Unfortunately, short of total nudity, that's about the last way I want to look when riding.
