9319 Miles

3 countries (Mexico, USA, Canada), 19 states (TX, OK, MO, KS, AR, TN, MS, AL, GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, PA, OH, MI, NY, IN, IL), 45 days, and 9319 miles on a 2015 EX300 Ninja visiting Civil War battlefields, Civil Rights sites, friends, and historic places. New tires (Michelin Pilot Street) and new spark plugs at 10,000 miles, an oil change at 12,000 miles (full synthetic), and a low-beam bulb and a new chain at 13,000 miles. Only mods are the bike are a Saddlemens gel seat, a rack, a Yoshimura steering stem nut, and a Grateful Dead Stealie I used SW-Motech saddlebags and an Ortlieb waterproof duffle. Through heat and some heavy rain, on interstates and back roads, the Ninja just ran and ran.

Okay, the best riding was the TX Hill Country, Northwest AR, and Southwest VA. Also good are Western PA and Southern OH. Ninjas run wild and free here.

The Civil War battlefields: New Madrid, MO--Island No. 10 (which no longer exists since the Mississippi has changed course, but the site of an important Union victory); Henning, TN--Ft. Pillow where 264 US Colored Troops were massacred by enraged Confederates; Savannah, TN--Shiloh NHS; Vicksburg, MS--Vicksburg NHS and the USS Cairo, the only extant Civil War gunboat; Columbus, GA--Civil War Naval Museum; Appomattox Courthouse, VA--Appomattox NHS, where the war comes to its end; Manassas, VA--Manassas NHS; and Leesburg, VA--Ball's Bluff NHS where Lincoln's friend, Sen. Edwin Baker, was killed.

Civil Rights sites: Selma, AL--Selma NHS and the Baker AME Church where the marchers started and rallied; Montgomery, AL--International Civil Rights Center and the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where King was minister 1954-60 and where the Montgomery Bus Boycott began; Tuskegee, AL--Tuskegee Airmen NHS.

Historic sites: Johnson City, TX--LBJ's Boyhood Home, the Johnson Ranch and Texas White House, and Padernales Falls State Park; the Natchez Trace (runs from Nashville, TN to Natchez, MS, but you don't want to ride all of it); Warm Springs, GA--FDR Little White House.

Left for another day due to weather: Chattanooga and Chickamauga NHS; Blue Ridge Pky, the Tail of the Dragon, and Skyline Drive; Carl Sandburg NHS; Flannery O'Connor library in Milledgeville, GA.

The rest of the trip was visiting friends and places of nostalgia from my
childhood.

There are about as many trucks as cars on America's interstates so it's time for trucks to have their own.

Sounds like a great trip! I'm a history buff, and visiting sites where things happened is pretty cool.

The point of this post isn't to brag about my photography skills but to show that you don't need a big, expensive touring rig to make a long, involved trip like this one. With a few modifications and some thoughtful planning and packing the 300 Ninja is more than up to the task. You'll get 60 mpg. As a twin, it has more torque than a four of the same size so you don't have to downshift to pass anything. This bike is reliable, tough, and a lot of fun to ride. You can move it around while standing and turn it around without white knuckles on a country road. You'll enjoy it more than a GWing or a BMW GS1200 and still get there about the same time.

We already know that. Any one who routinely reads the Ride Reports knows how capable these bikes are.

What we don't know is what you saw - how you saw it - why you thought it was interesting.

I can say "I visited Philipsville, CA" but that doesn't tell you the cute roadhouse I stayed in, the awesome motorcycle garage, nor the neat morning light through the redwoods.

You don't have to post all 900+ pictures, but just a sampling to highlight your trip. Not everyone has the time or finances or freedom to do your amazing journey so a few pictures goes a long ways towards vicariously living it.
