Valve Adjustment

So this is a noob question but why do people get their valves adjusted ?

So that they open & close at the right tolerances, too far open & they could get a bang of the piston, destroying them & probably the whole engine. too tight & they don't allow air (or exhaust) to flow properly, suffocating the engine.


Fazer thou intake valves after a bang of the piston...

i dont get why people would adjust though? cant i just leave it as stock?

They move up & down constantly, given time they'll go out of spec.

The valve adjustment is a case of check & if they're out adjust them back into spec.

Don't worry. Your 2012 ninja won't need an adjustment for a long while...unless you're pushing 8k on the odometer already.

Everything does remain stock. The only thing that changes is the shim if the clearance is out of spec.

Over time, as the valve seat wears, the clearance between the valve and the lobe tightens up. If it gets too tight, thermal expansion can cause the valve to remain open slightly and the valve and the seat will be burned. Then it's time for a new head.
