RIP John Samuel Doerr

John Samuel Doerr
September 9, 1990 - October 28, 2011 RIP
AKA Doerrman on ninjette.org (99.99% certain)

Summary: Cager pulled in front of him, helmet failed, biker dead.

Palm Beach Atlantic student killed in a motorcycle accident in Boynton Beach

Quote:
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A Palm Beach Atlantic University student died on Friday night in a motorcycle accident.

John Samuel Alan Doerr, 21, was attempting to avoid getting hit by a car near the Boynton Beach Mall, according to Boynton Beach Police.

Andrew Alberino, 68, drove his red 2009 Chrysler Town and Country into the path of Doerr's 1991 black Kawasaki motorcycle while making a left turn, Slater said.

Doerr had laid his motorcycle down to avoid crashing into Andrew Alberino's car but instead, struck his head on its rear bumper, said Stephanie Slater, Boynton Beach Police spokeswoman.

Doerr died at the scene of the accident; Police said he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the other vehicle, Alberino was not injured in the accident.

Palm Beach Atlantic University released a statement stating Doerr was a sophomore majoring in cinema-television and television production and worked part time in the university's Media Services Department.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at PBA's DeSantis Family Chapel.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Cory Gray at (561) 742-6147.
His helmet failed to protect him. It was a
VCAN Sports VCAN Bluetooth Helmet BLINC 136 Gloss Black - Large

and he reviewed it here:

The only reason I'm not 100% certain this is doerrman is because the article says it was a 1991 black kawasaki and he posted here he had a 2006 blue Ninja.

RIP

He was a good kid and a young man with a plan, goals in life, which involved personal loves. Visited me at my home when he found out I can't travel far. He had always wondered about the 500's and I went against a personal rule and let him take my ninja 500 up the HWY and down the Ocean Rd. here. God blessed and kept him for sure, just wish he couldv'e made the mark he would have on this world.

RIP Doerrman. Coondog, he sounds like he was a nice kid. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know exactly what happened with his helmet, and sometimes even the best helmet can't help. But please everyone, make sure you've got a good quality helmet. A value-brand, Chinese-made DOT only helmet (VCAN is a Chinese company, Shanghai Hehui Safety Products, made not far from where I used to live) is really not a good safety purchase.

That sucks.

Guys plz don't settle on cheap gear and/or those that are non-reputable companies. I know of another rider who was so excited about being sponsored by a Chinese knock-off helmet company that when the rider crashed the helmet split wide open and suffered major injuries to the head. And even after the rider was warned by friends about the helmet the rider still chose to wear it.

Just say no to cheap gear!

A bluetooth helmet that sells for only $139 should be a warning sign. That tells me that they cut corners somewhere. Its possible that a better helmet would have made all the difference here.

Laying it down means that he crashed the bike before he impacted the car.

Sad to lose one of our own. About 4 years ago we lost "Kawi Davis" when he ran wide on a right-hand bend and hit an oncoming pickup truck.

But thinking about Doerrman and Kawi Davis makes me realize that I really haven't heard of more than these two (maybe three) EX-250 fatalities in 5 years of Ninja-forum time. I think that on the whole we're a pretty safe, careful group of riders.

Let's keep it that way. Ride safe everybody.

If its just a regular car, as opposed to an SUV or truck, going over the top is an option if you have a helmet and gear. Laying it down runs a high risk of going under the vehicle.

If his helmet failed because of hitting a plastic bumper, then I doubt it would survive the impact of hitting the road after flying in the air.

It turns out the 2009 Chrysler Town and Country is a minivan. I was thinking it was like a Town Car.

But if you are in a similar situation, and are wearing full gear, and you can make it over the top of the vehicle, then your accident could be no worse than a low side. (But not for the bike.)

I still haven't gotten 100% confirmation, but I think that its possible that he got a 600 and didn't tell anyone here. Hence the different color and year.

I'm going to try and get my hands on the accident report. No disrespect to Doerrman intended, but there are some unanswered questions that could help others avoid similar situations. There is no question that the cager is 100% at fault, but was Doerrman on his cell phone at the time? If so, that could have slowed his reaction time down. Exactly how did the helmet fail? Questions like that.

It brings to my mind three recent accidents, all with video, where laying down the bike led to some horrific results. One in NY, where a guy got stuck under a Torus. Another one, where a Harley rider was pulled away from under a burning car. And another one, where a guy laid his bike down and had a truck almost run over his foot. Everyone probably remembers all three of these.

It appears that laying the bike down is a very poor option in street riding. RIP.

I would suspect that it wasn't the helmet hitting the bumper that caused the trauma, but the reaction that type of impact could have on the neck. Just an educated guess however.

Sad story. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

For sure. Just the trauma of being run over is bad enough. Then there is the issue of people at the accident scene being smart enough to get the car off you so you can breathe. The one in NY is an example of people just gawking while the biker suffocates to death. And lastly, you have the old lady syndrome where they don't stop and drag you down the street until you've been ground down to a pile of blood and miscellaneous parts.

Going under is not a good option.

Even if your head is encased in a helmet (no matter how high quality) if your brain is subjected to instantaneous g-forces above a certain level, it will scramble. And if your head is being accelerated/decelerated in that abrupt manner there's also a very good chance your neck won't be up to the stresses involved either.

During my Air Force career I had to sit through aerospace physiology courses, some of which were simultaniously entertaining and frightening. One instructor had a film in which they'd taken the fight scenes, falls, and car crashes from several movies and analyzed them for g-force effects on the human body. The brain of Iron Man character Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) racked up something like 8 or 9 accelerations/decelerations registering in the high fatality probability range in just one single fight scene (the one against the bigger silver-gray suit, I never actually saw the whole movie). This damage would occur no matter what sort of Unobtainium his suit was made of because your brain sloshes around in your head anyway.

Rest in peace, John.

This is a good reminder to remember to always keep RIDING your bike. It handles much better upright and with the tires contacting the ground than it does on its side.

100% confirmed!

I have confirmed that this was indeed Doerrman.

I still don't have all the facts, but I suspect that they will ultimately confirm the fact that helmets reduce head injuries, but do not make you invincible.
