How do I unlock my steering without key?

Basically I am waiting 10 or so days on my new ignition to come in. (I bought the bike with a destroyed ignition) is there anyway in the meantime I can bypass the steering lock so I am able to try and get the bike going?

Thanks

Take the old ignition off and your steering will be free and you will have access to the wires to get it started by "Hot" wiring it.

sit on the bike sidesaddle with the kick stand down, left foot on the left peg, hold the rear seat and the frame and use your right foot to push hard on the left handlebar. you'll need about 200lbs of force at least.

I took the top clamp off, drilled out the bolts, removed the switch from the lock cylinder, and had a bike I could still turn off

Can you not jam a screwdriver in the ignition and try turn that with a bit of force?

this thread sounds like a bunch of amateur bike theives who finally decide to steal a bike. So they go out and find a bike. But then, they realize that they weren't quite as ready as they originally thought. So they have the conversation that we're currently having.

all the thefts i've seen have been single theives. breaking a steering lock is easy. screwdriver to bust the ignition on is easy. riding away like its your bike is easy.

If you take the old assembly off and together with the new ignition assembly to a locksmith, he can swap out the tumblers so that the new ignition keys matches the old ignition. That way you don't have to carry a second set of keys for the seat and helmet locks. Not only that, but the VIN will match the keys so if you ever need a key made by the number, you can do so.

How did drilling the bolts go for you? I still have yet to take stuff apart. Been lazy

There are a ton of hot bikes out there for sale. When the ads say "no title or keys" its a safe bet that its hot. Take a look at this one:

http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/mcy/3889797501.html

I wouldn't touch that thing with a 100 foot pole. Not even for parts.

In Florida, and probably most other states, the title is kept electronically by the state. So a legitimate owner ALWAYS will have a title. Even if you lose the paper title, its just a quick trip to the DMV to get a new copy.

A stolen bike wont have title or keys.

Yep, probably could have gotten a duplicate title, if the PO Hadn't gone to jail for life.

It was easier to claim legal ownership with a nice, easy 1 page form

Heh, I took it to a machine shop to get the security bolts out. Didn't have time to mess with it, especially without a vice.
