Alex's secret route
I've been leading weekend morning moto rides with some coworkers lately, and this week we decided to stray from the usual Santa Cruz Mountains routes and head north from San Francisco, to the beautiful hills of Marin and beyond.
The first time I did this route, I tagged along with Alex and his usual gang, way back in April. I've been meaning to do it again for a long time, but been a bit apprehensive about getting lost--the list of directions I noted down is a mile long. But with a couple of coworkers with me, getting lost wasn't a terrible threat. The worse threat was the biting cold. I messaged Alex earlier this week to ask about the route's conditions and he warned that it was cold. He wasn't kidding. I bundled up in every layer I could reasonably fit under my leather gear and was still chilled to the bones of my fingertips. We stopped after turning onto one of the more remote roads to give our hands a bit of a warming. The scenery out there is just stunning. I've been all over the west coast, from Washington state to the south of California, and nothing is as beautiful as the roads of California's north bay area. Very close to the end of our route, just a couple of miles north of turning off of CA-1, we rolled onto the scene of a nasty head-on collision. We were maybe the fifth to arrive, and we got there well before emergency vehicles showed up. We had to decide if we should wait for the road to clear or find another route back. Unfortunately, my sheet of directions didn't account for alternate routes but after scoping out the severity of the accident (bad, wouldn't be cleared for a long time) we decided we had to turn back. Turned out it was a lot easier to find our way than we thought. We made it back to the freeway via Petaluma and cruised home, fulfilled. Great day, great ride. Hope all involved in the crash are okay.

Glad you made it up there, Ryan! Where was that accident, on 1 or off of it?

On 1, maybe two miles north of Petaluma Point Reyes Road. Car going north around a right-hander went wide and crossed the double yellows, struck a woman coming the other way. She was driving a nice convertible car of some sort (too mangled to tell when we got there). The sun was shining. She was probably having a fantastic day before that.
