At least you got it back. Insurance should be able to cover the damages. Hopoefully the painted fairings won't set you back.

I wonder if they can get any finger prints off the bike to be worthwhile.

Cheer up, Maxime; those are great news.

The despicable poor devils just took her for a joy ride, rather than for making a few dollars.

Not a total loss, would need new paint job and some parts but its a survivor. Only fairing piece lost is the front fender looks like. Does it start and run?

Looks like a quick spray paint job to make it not match the bike that was stolen (at first glance).

I'd imagine that there's a ton of labor involved in properly prepping the sprayed panels to be painted back to OEM quality, as far as insurance value goes. It might be cheaper for them just to buy new fairings. The tank also needs to be addressed since they went after the Kawasaki logo. Plus all the random overspray. Completely ignoring any mechanical damage, I think a shop would charge quite a bit to make that look like new again. I can easily see insurance totaling it out.

However, it doesn't seem to be a ton of major damage. You might be able to buy it back from the insurance company for cheap, and either part it out for any good stuff left on it, or maybe even make a track bike out of it (where it doesn't need to look perfect).

If my bike were stolen, I'm not sure I'd want it back unless it was found in the neighbor's driveway looking just as it was in my garage. Between the damage done to make the parked bike rideable, to literally "driving it like they stole it", to whatever started being done to it in preparation for the chop shop or whatever, I'm just not sure I could ever fully trust it again, or even get it back to the state that I keep it in.

I have no idea how someone could do that. It's one thing to have it stolen and never seen again, but another thing to recover the bike looking like that.

In some ways that is worse than a fresh start. Hope the blue is still soft enough to come off with solvent.
Like with burglary what people who have not had a bike stolen don't realise is that its not just the hardware, it is the sense of violation.

My MG midget was stolen and recovered in that kind of state, months of resto work ruined slashed up, dents, carbs and such gone . Sold it as a project I just couldn't face starting again on it.

Personally now that it's recovered, your insurance should be replacing anything that is not 100% how you had it.

That means new fairings, new tank, new ignition etc.

I know I wouldn't accept any less from them. Remember, don't let them low ball you on their offer.

Or maybe seeing the amount of money that has to go into it, they'll total it out, let you buy it back cheap, then you can buy a new one with the payout plus a track bike!

Post 77626 is all about replacing the ignition. I'm just pointing that cosmetically it could be worse, could had been totally trashed. I am just wondering if they ran it till it broke or if the engine is still good, could have ran it till it was out of gas and left it.

I would say almost certainly not. Unless the frame/forks are bent it looks like some plastic and a brake pedal. Assuming your insurance is valid in the house you will have to get a quote for repairs, and that will give you a good idea how close it is to the book value of your bike.
Without a repair estimate neither you or the insurance company can make a decision.
Also check the policy for clauses excluding riding it off the highway, which the stairs almost certainly are

Carrying a bike up some stairs out of a basement sounds pretty damn sketchy! Hope you weren't injured when you slipped. It is the "baby ninja", but it's still more weight than I'd like on me or scraping past me.

I don't like the you tag either. It's like a tool that is only useful for trolling.

@Alex - can you change the functionality of the you tag so that if you use it your profile is adjusted so that your name, bikes, location and signature are all replaced with the phrase:
"TROLLOLOLOLOLOL"
and the profile image is replaced with the troll face:
