Cant shift into 1st gear

HI
I just bough my first bike, a 04 Gpx250. Owned it and have been riding it for about a week. The Previous owner had not changed the chain in quite a while. I ordered a new one and in the mean time i though i would give the current one a good clean and lube. I took the front sprocket cover off and gave it a good clean with some kerosene and a old paintbrush. Now no matter what i try i cannot get the bike into fist gear. It will go into second, (and then no other because of the safety) But i cannot get it to go past neutral into first. I have tried changing the angle of the shift leaver but nothing seems to help.

Hello Mitchell, and welcome to Ninjette!

Can only change gears out of neutral when engine is running.
Also make sure shift-linkages connecting to shift-rod is connected at 90-degrees

I did not have the bike running due to cleaning the carbs. however now that its running i still cannot shift into first. I have also found out that i cannot shift into anything above 2nd, Only neutral and second. I am not quite sure what you mean about the shift linkages being at 90 degrees so i have included a picture of them.

I feel like i have done really simple, Like put the linkage on backwards or something.

I did the dumb. I had the shift linkage on backwards. Works fine now. Can you confirm that this is the right orientation.

Thanks
