Working nights....

I have been on nights now for about 4 years, and still trying to get used to it!!! Once things slow down here at work, I normally get on here and surf. How many of you do or have worked nights and how do you handle it as far as rotating your schedule on the weekend? Gene

I currently work second shift (1600 - 0230 mon-thur). I typically get online and surf while I'm doing my work. I go to bed anywhere between 0300 and 0600 and get up anywhere between 1000 - 1300 depending on whether or not I want to go out and do something in the day before I have to go to work. For me the weekend stuff doesn't really start going on untill afternoon or later in the night so it doesn't change for me.

Gene,

I work 3rd shift as well 11:30pm to 8am. On top of that I have school all day Tuesdays and Thursdays. On those days it really sucks because I am literally awake for 24 hours. I go to work Monday night stay up all day Tuesday and don't go to bed until Tuesday night and the same goes for Wednesdays into Thursdays.

The best way I can think of getting adjusted is coming home and staying awake. Then going to be in the afternoon and waking up in the evening. That way you are refreshed considering you have to be at work shortly.

For myself on the days I have school, I come home sleep about 4 hours then get up and do it again.

Working 3rd shift sucks because it really affects your sleep and state of mind most of the time. But for what it's worth, its much less stressful then working 1st shift!

Heck yes. 3rd shift is the most relaxing ever. I miss working it so much. I was able to slack sooo much too

Amen to that. I've worked all three shifts and find first to be the most stressful because it's all political and such. Third shift can screw you up because of how you will go in on a monday and finish on a tuesday. Then when you go to sleep on tuesday when you wake up it's still tuesday. When the normal mind set growing up is that when you wake up it's a whole new day and this sleep schedule doesn't conform to that, it messes with your mind and you start to lose track of the days.

There's no doubt midnight shift is more laid back and less stressful. The perfect shift for me would be evenings as far as rest goes, but with kids at home that is tough. I did finally break down and get something to help with my sleep. Tried some over the counter stuff but didn't like the after effects. Finally got a prescription for some Ambien to help. Made a world of difference.

Before the military, I use to work 2nd shift 4:30-12:00. Was on that shift for years, was perfect I thought. Sleep in, prowl at night
Did the whole 3rd shift for a year, it was a job. Didnt really care for the hours, but still better than a day job.

2nd shift FTW! Nowdays I dont really have choice, Suck it up and go to work

It sucks, I used to sleep half the day away everyday. Used to be so stressed that I was awake until daybreak most nights, then slept a few hours to go in and do it again. This of course made weekends suck since getting going late was like 3 or 4 or 5 in the afternoon.

I had the opposite problem. I worked nights (7:30pm-6am monday-friday) for about 5 years and loved it. I'd often times stay up saturday, sleep long on Sunday, and by Monday would be right as rain. THEN I worked days for about 4 years and could never get used to it. If I had to work before 10am I was a wreck. Now I'm back to working nights again and am well again

The big problem with school was on long days. If I had classes until 1pm or so I'd usually be groggy as hell by the last class. 8am classes were fine though

I used to work 7pm to 7am (which was actually 6:30pm to 7:30am). I work in the semiconductor field. I did that for about 5 years before I finally left the night shift. It was not that bad. I could get off work and still take care of everything I needed to get done. It was nice too because I could hit the gym at around 7:45am, and it would be pretty empty. I actually liked it, but I also enjoy not needing to swap my schedule around all the time.

I'm glad to be days now.
