Newgen exhaust on pregen?
Does anybody know if the exhaust will swap over? From what I can tell they're the same except for the 2-1 set up, which is really the only reason I want to swap. If this is already covered somewhere, I apologize and ask that someone point me to the thread because I can't find it. Thanks!

Info here:
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Will_a_...it_my_88-07%3F It's been done, but it won't perform as well. The user who did it went quiet soon after doing the swap, so I really don't know how it feels long term. |

Don't waist your time, I have pipes, cans and tools all over my garage and I still went with a manufactured full system. The key to chone's link is "Not worth your time".

@Racer x is also well-versed on the intricacies of swapping generation exhausts on different generation motors.

the pregen headers have a transfer tube while the new gens dont. IIRC the pregen headers are a mm or two bigger.

Darn.. The muzzy is expensive. Does anyone know any good places to get used stuff like that? I know aftermarket parts are getting harder and harder to find for the pregens..

I would have to look at it. It would defenitly not help performance.

If you want to buy a used Muzzy for cheaper, you're going to really have to keep an eye open on Ebay. I asked a few members to keep their eyes open for me, and I checked ebay religiously for a long while. I ended up getting a used system in fair condition for a great price. They do pop up once in a while, but the bidding goes up quickly.

And Chris, I have been. All the time. But I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled. There's a guy around here that drives the same year bike with a muzzy. I'll have to convince him that he wants to trade systems |

Yeah, it took a while.
Don't just search for 'muzzy' also just search for 'ninja 250 headers'. I got lucky and the guy I bought mind from was a bike scavenger who had no idea those weren't the stock headers. He just posted some '2005 ninja 250 headers' for like $80. There was only me and one other bidder, who dropped out early. Then I bought a can used. Check for sellers like those. |

Well I am a welder, what if I was to make a header and get a can for it? Could I use aluminum pipe that's the same spec as the muzzy and wrap it with exhaust tape or would it melt (the header not the tape)? Some of my cager friends have built aluminum turbo manifolds, but don't know if they used aluminized steel or just aluminum. I've get a bender and welder, so making it isn't so much of the problem as using something light and that can hold up to the egt's

So you think the aluminum would hold up? Because I could shed a lot of weight doing that, and it would be cheaper than most of the muzzy's I've seen.

I'm pretty sure the Muzzy headers are Aluminum. I tried using a magnet on my headers and it definitely didn't stick; it's definitely not steel. I'm positive it's not Titanium because it's not turning blue.

Awesome. I'm going to get to work on that. If I can make one for a reasonable price I might post a for sale thread and start making them for cheeep.

That's a stainless header. And no you can't make the head pipes out of aluminum, the wont take the heat !!! It's possible to see 1200 degrees at the exhaust port outlet, not common, but possible. There's no coolant running around the head pipe like there is in the cylinder head so it would just melt at that point.

They are most definitely stainless.
You could make your own header if you keep the exhaust flange from the stock headers and use cut metal donut and j pipes for the curves. Just tack them together to play with the routing.

Aluminum has really good heat transfer, if I use thick enough walled pipe. I mean worst case they start to melt and I check it of as a learning experience, and then I can tell people my ninjette is so badass that it melted its header pipes

Huh, I stand corrected. Stainless it is!
josefmd, that's not a Muzzy header. That's an OE set of headers that have been mangled and a Muzzy can has been stuck onto. Those won't make a darn bit of difference in how the bike performs. |

The purpose of a header, is to scavenge the cylinder. That's why you loose a little bottom end but gain on top end; the scavenging effect helps empty the cylinder at higher RPMs (and indirectly fill it faster with intake because of the value overlap), but drains it too quickly at lower RPMs. That's why you usually have modified cam and intake to go along with it, as opposed to using stock setup (which isn't setup for that). But the way this engine makes its power band, I doubt anyone notices the loss in the lower RPMs. But yeah, aluminum doesn't sound like it would make a good header (you don't really need to get rid of the heat on the headers, because that's what helps make the scavenging effect, along with free flowing exhaust).
