Thank you MSF!

Nothing that you guys don't already know, but just a quick note to acknowledge that taking the MSF likely just saved my booty

Went for a quick ride over lunch, going down a three lane 55mph road with two lights about two hundred yards or so apart. Red at the first light and the second is on red too; light turns on both and I take off in a spirited manner... Half way between the lights the second one changes again....no problem, plenty of distance to stop and I start breaking. I hear tire screeching and I am thinking that some idiot is locking up somewhere.... that is when I start to feel the rear skid pretty good and I realize that I am said idiot

Immediately remembered that they told us in the MSF to just ride it out if the rear locks up, so that's what I did and came to a controlled stop before the light. Immediately proceeded to look around like I totally meant to do that.....

Too bad I did not have the GoPro, I am sure it would have looked pretty cool.

It wasn't a panic stop as I knew I had plenty of space and, while I use both breaks in most cases, I do heavily favor the front break (the whole 80/20 thing), so I just put this down as a rider error whereby I stepped on the rear too hard for some reason. No harm done, bike and undies are still clean, but another mental lesson learned

So my sincere thanks to all the guys and gals "donating" their time and expertise to newbs like me in these classes.

I did not see anything and there were cars behind me so no chance to look back once stopped at the light.

The rear brake has its purposes but slowing down the bike isn't one of them.

Good point, but this was about 6 miles into the ride. It is pretty chilly and windy here tody, but I would think the stock tires should be warmed up after that distance. Is my assumption on that wrong?

Stock IRC tires??
If so they cool off way faster then they heat up. I dumped mine 1 block after gettin off interstate for a 10 mile stretch at 75+, thinking the tires would be heated up enough

I have mixed feelings about MSF's instructions to "ride it out" when you lock up the rear brake. If you are going at highway speeds and lock up the rear brake, following these instructions will net you a nicely flat-spotted and unbalanced tire. The idea behind the MSF instructions is that you don't want to release the rear brake when the rear wheel is out of alignment with the front (to avoid a highside). But if you are going straight and lock up the rear tire, letting off the brake when the rear is lined up with the front will result in the tire starting to spin normally again. A beginner might not have the experience to release the brake when the bike is aligned, so the MSF just says to stay on the brake until you come to a stop.

And I use my rear brake (in conjunction with front) to stop all the time. In the city I will sometimes only use the rear brake. Really just a matter of personal preference and knowing the current conditions and traffic situation.

That was mentioned in my MSF class. The instructor went on to say that instead of thinking too much about what is going on during the incident (which is what newbs like me do) just ride it out.

What they were adamant about was releasing and reapplying the front brakes if you grab a fistful.
