Alberta Learner's Permit ?

I did try using the search function.. didn't find anything, so I'm posting here..

A buddy of mine moved out to Alberta and is looking into getting a bike... but the licensing out there is so... contradicting to say the least.

Basically, you get your class7 - hold it for a year, move up to your class6 (but only if you have a class5.

and the rules regarding the class7 (learners) are:

No nighttime riding, no highway & MANDITORY 2-UP, Really???

http://www.transportation.alberta.ca...ddriverlic.pdf

can anyone from alberta confirm that you actually need to be "followed in close proximity" or ride 2-up with someone who has a licence?

Here in Ontario, you go in, you write your M1. Ride off on your bike.

Yeah, I live in calgary ab. With your written knowledge test, you can ride with someone who has a NON-GDL class 6. But you can take your road test the next day after doing your written if you wish... In other words you don't have to ride for a year before getting class 6!

So he can go to a registry office and do the class 6 knowledge test and then do a motorcycle training course and THEN take the class 6 Motorcycle License TEST? Supposing that he passes he can then buy a bike and ride solo with no one bothering him?

Minor threadjack - what's the riding like around Calgary, especially the west side? It looks like I'll be out there come July, so just trying to get a feel for the place...

Cheers,

Alan
