$2000 To Spare

I was just wondering...

If you had $2000 dollars to spare towards getting another motorcycle, what type of motorcycle would you get?

I'm thinking about getting a project or ride ready bike, maybe. I'm up in the air as to what I should get. I'm considering: older 600cc sportbike, cafe racer, bobber, dual purpose, supermoto...

I guess I need some ideas/motivation as to what I should get.

So... how would you spend the $2000?

EDIT: I guess I probably should've said:

"If you ONLY had a total $2000 dollars to spend on another bike, what would you get and how would you make it street legal, track ready, running, something you'd use often... "

I know it's not much, and sure I'd love to add another zero... I don't want to use it as a down payment. I want to see what possibilities are out there with this type of budget.

Do you get a bike that needs a little 'tlc'? Do you spend the $2000 on a running bike that is ready to ride? Do you buy a 'project bike' for really cheap and use the rest to restore/customize?

What would you do?

Sumo or Aprilia RS125, two bikes that I just think would be fun to rip around on for leisure rides.

There is an RS125 for sale by me, I look at the website like every week and try and crunch numbers in my head to make it work which means that I shouldn't buy it.

2k would be enough money to make me buy it fo sho.

Larger dual sport. Every time I go out I see fire roads or Jeep trails that I would love to explore but... No clearance on the Ninja.

Supermoto, probably as much fun as you can have on a motorcycle if you have a group to ride with.

Either a cafe racer or a track bike.

Cafe racer could be either something semi-authentic (e.g. Triumph) with enough mods to tweak it to my liking, or a project (e.g. Ryka).

Track bike could be a Ninjette, SV650 or older supersport. Since I already ride a GSXR on the street I'd probably lean towards a GSXR, but the less you spend on a track bike the more money you have for track days.

Fortunately for my wallet, there isn't enough room in my marriage for two motorcycles. So if I came into that $2000 it'd most likely go towards the mortgage....

I'd need to add a zero to that $2000 to get something. Two grand doesn't buy anything I'd really want (as far as a bike goes).

$2000? I'd buy a badass trailer and hitch for my little scion, spend the rest on front end suspension and new boots/gloves and get ready for some track days. I don't need any other bikes.

But if you only had $2000... how would you use it to get another (running) bike?

I'd low ball for a ZR-1, ZX7RR, KZ1000R, or a GS1000S. Maybe an H1 or H2.

I'd spend about $1500 - $1800 on something in mostly serviceable condition, and the rest of the money fixing whatever was needed to get it rideable. At that price point, that's pretty much your only option.

Now, if you increased the number to say $5000 - $6000, this gets a lot more interesting, as that opens up a lot more options, including new entry level bikes, and a wide variety of used ones.

Me personally, either a late 90s DR350 or a DRZ400. 2 grand aint enough to get one in sumo trim though but that's okay

I've been eying a couple CBR 600 F4i's (early 2000) just around $2K...

How do you guys like your CBR's?

ok, if I came into 2 grand I would use it to pay off my 300. now if I came into 2 grand, didn't have a bike or any other serious bills for it then I would get my hands on a supermoto for sure, can't really find any sport bikes in that range that aren't a potential monetary risk due to age (i.e. more than 10 years old. pregen 250 doesn't count but I've been there done that and kinda still have the remains lol) if you upped it to 3-4000 then a solid sport/track bike would be plausible but really a supermoto can do that anyway.

so yea, a supermoto and gas/insurance for said supermoto

Two stroke. Nothing like 6 foot smoke stacks to get ya going.

Two stroke 250 or 350 is all you need. Just ask @Vintage Smoke

I like it a lot. I hated it for a while but that was due to shoddy maintenance from the POs and me expecting it to be like a brand new bike. Now that I've taken care of that stuff, got new tires and brakes, etc it pretty much is like a brand new bike. Very, very fast. Sounds freaking amazing. It rides very smooth, handles amazingly, especially with a new Dunlop Q3 up front. turns out the old Pirelli it had was over 6 years old... and even with that on it it still handled pretty dang good! It gets a lot of attention/compliments/etc. Mine personally is pretty rashed up but most people don't notice and just tell me it's a sweet bike. A lot of people are curious about it because they don't know of the pre-RR CBR600s and are surprised it's a 2001 lol. It's very comfortable for me, actually it fits me perfectly. My Ninja is a bit more awkward for me to sit on. It's not as aggressive as newer bikes but it is fairly leaned over, and it IS still a supersport despite what some people say. Seating position is personal preference though, I'd probably be just comfy on a more aggressive bike as on my F4i. Better overall street bike than modern 600s (excluding the 636) in terms of power delivery, but honestly it peaks at 12,500 rpms and redlines at 14,200, that's a peaky engine by my definition. It's not as grunty as my 500 but coming from a 250 it's going to feel like a rocket powered torque monster. You won't ever need to go past 5-6k... but you will want to. And when you do, it won't be legal and it will be fun.

$2k isn't a bad price for an F4i but you get what you pay for. Though it's probably one of the better older bikes to get.. reliable as dirt, thick frame, etc.

Where the heck are you guys seeing $2,000 supermotos? $3k is like the starting point for an older CONVERTED DRZ400S to SM without any of the goodies! Don't think I've seen a factory SM for under 4k, and one with an FCR carb, E model/stage 1 cams, etc will go for a premium.

And that's for a DRZ...

Even a $1500 dual sport + a set of 17s, tires and the cost of installation + tax and registration comes to $3k anyways and you're still riding on a $1500 dirt bike chassis (aka garbage)

Don't mean to be a buzzkill but OP was asking somewhat legitly what he could get for 2 grand lol.

Thank you Murphey!

I am trying to see what is possible with the given budget...

I would love to do a custom Virago into such:

OR

...but I don't think it's possible with given budget.

Still, I'd love to see what the possibilities are...

I would sit on the cash. I don't want any more motorcycles. One is enough for me.

There is an RS125 for sale by me, I look at the website like every week and try and crunch numbers in my head to make it work which means that I shouldn't buy it.

2k would be enough money to make me buy it fo sho.
hmmmm... the 125 idea is great. Because it's small enough to rail on the kart track. SUPER CHEAP TRACK DAYS!
