The Goodyear D402 Tire Saga Continues

Goodyear settles with a victim over faulty tire once more, bringing count to nine and there's no recall in sight

Goodyear has agreed to yet another settlement in a case regarding an allegedly defective tire causing a fatal motorcycle crash. This brings the number of settled cases to nine, but the company has yet to issue a recall.

Back in May, we reported on the case of the allegedly faulty Dunlop D402 tire believed to be responsible for a dozen crashes. The Harley-Davidson-specific tire has been named as the main culprit by both victims and experts.

Goodyear refuses to acknowledge any flaws in their product, instead blaming riders for over-loading or over-inflating the tire. Over the years, the company has been the target of numerous lawsuits linked to D402-related crashes, most of which Goodyear has opted to settle outside of court despite their denial to admit to any fault.*The latest case to be settled is Judith McAllister-Lewis’ case which was filed in 2014 and will be .

McAllister-Lewis was the passenger on a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic when, in August 2010, the D402 rear tire blew out causing a crash. Her husband Robert Lewis suffered fatal injuries while she has had to live with permanent injuries, both physical and psychological. The case was set to go to trial on June 5, 2018 at the federal courthouse in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, when the two parties suddenly came to a amicable and confidential agreement.

Her story isn’t unique, and over the last decade five deaths and 22 cases of injuries have been linked to a faulty D402 tire. Roughly half of those incidents resulted in a lawsuit. Despite consistent indications that the tire could indeed be faulty, the company has yet to investigate and recall their product. Another day, another settlement.
