Project 'Matilda'

I'd been off a bike for a year and really missed riding.

While scanning the classifieds an '09 Ninja 250 popped up and it looked like an affordable challenge. So a trip to Tennessee saw Matilda land in the truck bed. I didn't look her over as closely as I might have as it was pouring rain when I picked her up. The guy threw in a bunch of extras like the stands, so it was hard to turn down.

He told me that it was pulled apart for a carb-clean and never reassembled. I found more than that, but nothing that wasn't fixable. At least she's mostly there!

I'll chronicle our journey here.

Ride on,

J~

Less than a grand. I should be able to sell it for twice what's been invested once she's done.

Ride on,

J~

Thanks for the comments!

The carbs are clean and installed. She lives!

I had to use a funnel as a mini-tank because the fuel tank still has water in it, but she runs and shifts perfectly. The carbs weren't as dirty as I expected.

I pulled and replaced the plugs and the old ones didn't look as clean as I expected them to. The bike has 28k miles on it. Hmmmm...

New oil, an oil filter, and an air filter are next.

Ride on,

J~

The oil change, air filter and sprockets are done. Brakes are next. Not looking forward to the tires, but stock size Contis shouldn't be too difficult to deal with.

If you snug the chain with a piece of paracord while you tighten the axle, the chain adjustment plates stay in place. The new chain was a couple of links short. The PU catalog is wrong. If it was geared stock the chain would have been too short.

Ride on,

J~

eh? What size chain does PU list? What size sprockets do you have?

I went for 43/14 (instead of the US stock 45/14). The last Ninja had a 15/45 ratio and it didn't pull as well in the mountains here as I wanted it to.

PU listed a 520/104 when a 520/106 is needed for 43/14. I guess a 108 would be necessary for a 45/14.

Ride on

And the tires are on and balanced. The brakes are done too.

I had to plug the compressor into the outlet in the tail section and use it to seat the beads while the engine ran. Good times!

Then there was the jammed wear-adjustment pin in the rear caliper. It took hours to get out. But it's done and she's almost ready to roll.

I still have to put her plastics on, mount the plate and figure out how to mount turn signals without a rear fender.

Ride on,

J~

Here's ratios & chain-lengths I've seen:

45/14 (stk) = 3.21:1 = 106L chain
43/14 = 3.07:1 = 105L
45/15 = 3.00:1 = 107L

There's more than enough adjustment range on swingarm slot to make full link changes. If you really want to be precise, you can get half-link pieces of chain (centre top row).

Thanks!

I'm applying selective apathy to some parts of the project. (PU listed a 104 as stock.) She's bike #31 and I'm not worrying too much about what won't get me killed.

Ride on,

J~

Here's what I'm gonna do.

Notice how turn-signals are just about as wide as "hips" of rear bodywork? I'm going to get set of these flush-mounts and put them at outer-edge of back of "hips". I don't like LED lights, they're too dim!

Those are nice but they won't work with saddlebags.

I had to make up a clarifier the ensure that the fuel would be free of water when I put it back in the tank. A couple of pieces of hose and a Pepsi bottle did the trick.

Then I mounted the plate and put her plastics on.

I'd picked up an H7 bulb to replace the HID headlight bulb because the ballast had gone bad. I hate HID lights anyway... Then I found that an H4 socket had been wired in instead of the stock H7. What? So I fixed that and now her eyes don't match. (Apathy applied.) The dog helped.

And then we went for a ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Happy at last!

Still looking for turn signals, but we'll get there soon.

Ride on,

J~
