Zip Code Field

Hi all -

I enabled a user profile field for Zip Code a short while ago. A member requested it, thinking that it would be a useful tool to help find other ninjette owners nearby. I agreed, and first added it as an optional field. A short while later, I made it mandatory for new members when they register, and also if anyone went in to edit their profile. A week from today, I plan to change it so it will be a mandatory field for users, and a dialog box will come up for anyone who has not yet filled in their zip code.

Of course there are many good reasons for people not wanting to fill in their own zip code, and I certainly respect that. For one thing, many ninjette.org users may not even have a zip code! If, for whatever reason at all you do not feel comfortable entering in your own zip code, just enter in 00000 instead.

Now, what can you do with this new zip code feature? You can find others near you! First, pull down the community menu and choose Member List:

Then, click the "search members" and then "advanced search" links:

Finally, enter a partial zip code (or even a full one!) into the zip code field to find other users who share a nearby zip code:

For example, search on "95" will find everyone with a zip code in 95xxx. That's it!

This clearly fulfills a similar need as the Member Map, but this isn't meant to fully replace that. It just provides yet another way to help bring ninjette riders together. Please PM me if you have any questions or concerns about this new feature...

- Alex
