Favorite beer/wine?

For those beer and wine snobs, what are your favorites? I admit to being a bit of a beer snob, with IPAs being my regular choice. I have lots of favorite beers, but the one I'm drinking right now ranks really high on my list of favs. It's a Southern Tier 2xIPA. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/57908

Lagunitas' Lil Sumptin, Bell's Two Hearted, and Centennial's Dirty Bastard are other delicious brews.

What are your favorites? I'm newer to wine so I'd love some recommendations!

McMenamin's Double Purple Haze. Good luck on ever finding it. When you do, order it by the pitcher.

I usually stick with local brewery beers from Hoppin Frog and Great Lakes Brewing, depending on how much I want to spend for a beer. In the summer I'll drink lighter/amber beers and in the winter I tend to go towards trying different stouts. But come fall I love Southern Tiers Pumking Ale, although at $10/bottle I try not to buy them all the time, but if you've never had it you should try it.

Oh hell yeah! It's about the time of year pumpkin brews start making an appearance around here. The Punking is awesome! I always get a few big bottles and drink them through the winter. Southern Tier brews some damn good bear.
There are a couple of breweries here in Athens. Terrapin is the most popular. Their Hopsecutioner is yummy, but you better like hops!

Purple Haze is good. A little fruity for my tastes, at times. Double Haze is double everything...the alcohol, the fruit. Ironically, it's hardly fruity tasting at all. Very rarely brewed. My favorite beer.

You are most likely thinking of the Abita purple haze, which is pretty much available everywhere. It's a little sweet but makes a good black & tan. You would be hard pressed to find the McMenamins anywhere outside of OR.

Oh, yeah, I bet you're right. I do remember trying the Abita one. I like their Nut Brown ale in the fall (or it may be called pecan something...) I prefer a slightly deeper beer than most Abitas.

I had the purple haze about 8 years ago, when I was still experimenting with different flavors. Now I stick to porters and stouts almost exclusively, or the darkest ale I can get if none are available. (Guinness doesn't count ) The TurboDog is Abitas brown ale available year round. I thought it was just ok, but it's very highly rated.

I tried one of those on a dare once. I was supposed to chug it but after one taste I actually puked right in the middle of the parking lot going back to the car. I can't even smell one of those today without dry heaving.

I remember the first (and last) time I had a Guiness. I thought it tasted like nasty water and can't figure out how people drink it.

On another note, I'm heading out to Hoppin Frogs Grand Opening of their tasting room tonight and hopefully stock up on some more beer . They're also rated the 17th best brewery in the world by RateBeer.

Interesting! What is it you prefer about the porters and stouts? I can drink a porter on occasion, but I'm not a fan of stouts. I'm more of an IPA fan.

Pretty much comes down to flavor for me! So historically, the term "stout" was used to denote a strong porter (where weaker beer was considered to be "slender.") Today though, since one brewer's stout can easily be lighter than another brewer's porter, there's really no dividing line between the two and the terms can be used interchangeably. So there are probably some stouts you'd like, and some porters you wouldn't.

IPAs are tough for me. I've really tried to get into them since they're all the rage right now, but I just can't do it. I think I've had a couple that were on the maltier side and not as offensive to the tastebuds, but it seems like lately it's been a competition of who can make the hoppiest, bitterest, most headache inducing beer they can. I was blown away at a Pliny the Younger release a couple years ago. Paid like $10 for a 4oz flute of one of the worst "craft" beers I've ever had, and people were going bananas over it.

I can't seem to get into IPA's either, too bitter. And here's some stuff I stocked up on last night. I'm surprised the pumpkin and Christmas beers are out already.

I've never seen Hoppin' Frog around these parts. Looks good! We're starting to get pumpkin brews trickling in around here too. I'm drinking a delicious IPA right now...Ipswich 7%...a big bottle.

It is the last Saturday before school starts back. Drinkin' up!

I'm working my through every ale I can find, Moonshine being the most recent discovery, it's a very tasty beverage, a bit weak at 4.3% but that means you can drink it all day.

Guinness can be very variable, if it's somewhere that the bar staff know what they're up to, sells a lot of it & keeps the pipes clean it's a very tasty beer, but get a bad one & it will be vile, and it will leave you in a heap .

To spot a good one see if anyone else is drinking it, if the head has left bands the entire way down the glass it's a good sign:

I've seen some idiot even try to serve it with a lager style head

I've had it just about every way, and while its not really a bad beer, I feel like it's just made very bland to be easily accessible for most people who otherwise wouldn't enjoy dark beers. The only truly 'bad' guinness I've had was one served off one of those stupid agitator things. It used to be my go-to backup plan but now if there's anything else even remotely interesting on the menu, I probably take that over a guinness.

That's an interesting tip though. Reminds me of "wine legs."

I like my IPA, usually stuff like Mad Hatter, Sierra Nevada, Dogfish head.

Recently got into Kentucky Bourbon (Four Roses and Maker's).

I had it around St Patricks Day so I assumed it'd be relatively fresh. To me it tasted too watery and lacking any taste which I guess echos what Cynical said.

I'm digging 3rd Street brewery right now. The rise to the top cream ale is delicious, so is their Sugar Shack maple beer and the Lost Trout brown ale.

I'm going to the MN Autumn Brew Review for the 4th time on Sept 28th. Should be fun. And the same day is my wedding party, for which we'll get a Fat Tire keg. Mmm...

Beer
Guinness - the only beer I really like

A solid substitute for that would be New Belgium Fat Tire. Very good stuff.

Wine: Well La Linda Merlot is a great wine. It isn't dirt cheap, but it definitely isn't high dollar. You have to hit up an actual store that can order it for you to get it. A nice sub for that would be Woodbridge Merlot singles. I like those because many times I just want a taste and don't want to pop open a huge bottle, so it works nice. It isn't as good, but it works well.

Apex, try a Black and Tan! Half Guinness, half fat tire or other light colored beer.

Usually you mix the Guinness with Stella Artois or Harps and many bars will call the Fat Tire mix different things but its still good
