whats the best exhaust?

sooo, i have a 2010 black 250

i wasnt going to bother with an exhaust, but the other day i was in the car and i saw a biker from soooo far away mainly cause i could hear him over the rest of the traffic... so i think i want one.

so whats a good loud awesome exhaust?

preferably I'd like it to be black, but not crazy expensive like those carbon ones...

thanks in advance!

it's a matter of personal preference, but I hate loud exhausts... the general public does, too.

It's really personal preference. I think the Yoshi's are very nice to look at, and I like the sound (but they are loud). I know you said you were not interested in the CF ones, but I like those much better than the stainless or the titanium.

Another one to consider is Two Brothers. I think they also make an insert which cuts down on the noise somewhat. Not sure they make a black one though, other than CF.

Mr. Doppler would like to have a word with you.
No matter how big or fast or loud your bike is, the second you start moving forward you start to catch up to. And compress your own sound waves, which move relatively slow. It's not like you're ever going to beat your sound waves to a destination but visual conspicuity (headlights, headlight modulator, reflective/high-vis gear) is going to help you vastly more than obnoxious pipes. Light ALWAYS beats sound. That's not to say that loud pipes wouldn't add conspicuity in some situations (blind corners, letting unattentive drivers know there's something in their blind spot, etc.) but it would be foolish to rely on your pipes to get noticed. You also have a horn for those exact reasons, which people are generally going to react to more and recognize as a warning, as opposed to an exhaust growl, which is just another non-critical traffic noise.

Sorry to go all soapbox on you. :<

I think it is a good update as well. But I still think it is not as attractive as it could be, nor does it sound as nice.

Joyce - since you did ask a serious question I think OldGuy makes a good point re: AreaP. Definitely not cheap, but high quality and available in different lenghts (volumes). Still running the stocker here so thats about all i can add.

Ok seriously...I have the 15in Area-P. Its not screaming loud like a shorty pipe but when your on the throttle you can hear it. It is on the expensive side. If your going strictly sound...I'd go with a slip on. I hear the TBR is pretty loud

Paul, I always wondered if CF muffler is cooler than a metal one on the outside.

If you really want the best/loudest exhaust you have no choice other than this one:

Your neighbors will hate you!!!

There's also the EX-250's exhaust pulse pattern to consider.

To be perfectly honest, the EX-250 has a "farty" sounding exhaust pattern that's caused by the firing order of it's engine which is a parallel twin with a flat-plane crankshaft. It's pistons fire just 180 degrees apart from each other, then there's nothing for the next 540 degrees of engine rotation.

It's a very good engine design for high RPMs, great throttle response, and light overall weight, but it just doesn't sound pleasing to the ear no matter whether it's on a straight-pipe or thoroughly muffled.

Just about every other motorcycle engine on the market sounds better than an EX-250: V-twins sound better, 2 cylinder boxers sound better, every type of 4 cylinder engine sounds great, triples are like music.

Here's an example of just how far a manufacturer will go to avoid the EX-250 exhaust sound......

If you go to their website and read carefully, you'll find that the engineers at Triumph motocycles have chosen not to build any of their parallel twin bikes with flat-plane crankshafts. They're willing to take a hit on the engine's efficiency, weight, ability to rev freely, and it's RPM limit in order to get a pleasing exhaust pulse pattern.

The Triumph models "Thruxton" and "Bonneville" use a crankshaft design that causes both pistons to rise and fall together. This gives a sweet sounding, evenly spaced exhaust pulse but requires a bunch of extra counterweighing on the crankshaft and more bracing in the engine block to offset the mass of the pistons as they move up and down together.

The Triumph models "Thunderbird" "Speedmaster" and "America" use what Triumph calls a "270 degree" crankshaft. The only reason an engineer would put an offset crankshaft in a parallel twin engine is to make it sound like a V-twin, which is exactly what these bikes sound like. Once again, this configuration sounds good at the exhaust but it compromises negatively on every other engine design consideration.

So, making an EX-250 louder is just making a bad situation worse.

It is. Drastically. I've ridden for 4-5hours straight and been able to put my hands on the CF portion immediately after dismount. It's warm, but that's all. No burns.

Thanks - i have a good metal exhaust can burn on my forearm from reaching down near the warm bike in the garage and bumping the muffler.

I cant agree with this. I didn't like the way the stock pipe sounded, but I love the way it sounds with the 15in Area-P. I bunch of kids that I ride with all ride '06 R6's with various slip ons. When I first got the 250 they gave me the usual heckling but once they heard my twist the throttle a little they were asking me what exhaust it was so they could get their bikes to sound so good.

Depends on the packing on the exhaust as well. The VR6 doesn't get hot either and it is metal.

I think you meant to say, "I can't let myself agree with this because I desperately want my EX-250 to sound cool like my friends' bikes."

It's okay, a little denial can help sometimes. Say it often enough and you start to believe it.

By the way, I've got an Area P (the long, quiet-core 17'' model) and even though it sounds better than the stock pipes it's still farty. You just can't get around the way the engine was designed.

Thanks Matt, didn't know this but makes perfect sense. Was riding with noche_caliente one day last summer on the Blue Ridge and pulled over for a potty break at the same time some cruisers were in the lot. One poor lady just tossed her textile jacket over the back seat and walked away. About 5 seconds later she came running back when the 'melting' smell wafted over. She'd just liquefied a 2" hole in her jacket and put some nasty-smelling leftovers on her chrome pipe.

oh dont be sorry at all! i didnt mean to sound like i would rely on it, but i definitely think sound is just another way to be noticed on the road... really though, i'm pretty shy, i'd rather not be seen at all lol... but any little thing to make the bike safer, i think is a good thing. i dont want something that'll anger my neighbors, just something a little louder then what i've got now
