Black Friday / Record Store Day

Not sure how many of you are familiar with Record Store Day, but it's one day a year where you can get some exclusive music releases ONLY at your local independent record stores. Some are just early releases but most are very limited pressings. Anyway I guess with vinyl booming, they decided to get in on the black friday action and put out some pretty cool stuff. Here's what I was able to get my hands on.

Starting with these which are my top picks:

Link Wray - Big City After Dark - A double 7" gatefold jacket with replicas of his two ultra-rare Mala label 45's from 1962
Listen Here

JEFF the Brotherhood - Dark Matter
Listen Here

Toro Y Moi - So Many Details w/ B-Side remix feat. Hodgy Beats
Listen Here

The White Stripes - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground on red vinyl
Listen Here

Primus - Green Naugahyde 10 - 2 Live Tracks Never Before Released on Green Naugahyde embossed sleeve + clear green vinyl
By FAR my most prized takeaway. One of only 700. This one is an investment piece.
Listen Here

More to come!

Some other random cool stuff and a few I hope to appreciate:

Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Numbered split 7" of each artist performing Cohen's "Hallelujah." To be released in support of the new Alan Light book about Hallelujah (due Dec 4).

Ceelo Green & Don Hathaway - This Christmas (red & green split vinyl)

The Gaslight Anthem - Hold You Up (red vinyl)

Bob Dylan - Duquesne Whistle
Featuring "Duquesne Whistle", a song Dylan wrote with Robert Hunter, and which appears on his latest album Tempest. The B-side is a previously unreleased version of "Meet Me In The Morning" from the Blood on the Tracks sessions.

David Bowie - The Jean Genie
7" picture disc in advance of the 40th Anniversary reissue of Aladdin Sane.

Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman: Ascension (Big Beige Demos)
Features eight demo tracks from the new album on 12" clear vinyl. Cover of this release features the original drawing for the album cover.

Tenacious D - Jazz

King Diamond - No Presents for Christmas
Bitchin' picture disc

Two more White Stripes singles

John Mayer 2012 live performances

Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengance
30th anniversary picture disc

Grateful Dead - Live at Winterland 1973

Asobi Seksu / Boris
A split 7” of covers of each others songs. 7” includes a download card that features 4 classic songs from both bands.

Do you have a decent turntable? Can one even buy a decent turntable anymore?

I use an Audio Technica AT-120 direct drive, which at about $200 is considered a budget turntable. There are much cheaper options but this is good bang for the buck and probably the cheapest I'd recommend to anyone who cares about audio quality. They only get better from there. Rega, Pro-Ject, and Music Hall just to name a few. But you can find some monster deals on quality old hi-fi stuff at estate sales and flea markets. Some of the best amps and turntables you can get are from yesteryear.

My problem with using a vinyl is that I never could keep the needle from skipping when I am driving down the road.

I much prefer vinyls to CD's. However, we were all forced to go the CD route when they stopped mass producing them. Plus the CD's are nice because they are easy to dump on the computer or in an MP3 player. Still, I have several vinyls that I would play if I still had a turntable. Meh, maybe one day.

I'll take that Primus album off your hands.

There are cheaper turntables, but if you have vinyl you care about I wouldn't chance damaging them with a ceramic cartridge. I'll sell you that primus disc next year for $150.

L2 read. Record store day exclusive (limited) release. Go to recordstoreday.com and find your nearest participating independently owned record store and go in with fingers crossed hoping they still have it.
