Idling around 2.5-3k - Should I bring it back?

Hey guys. I bought my 2010 Ninja 250r from someone that bought the bike and then bought a house and couldn't afford both. The bike had 89 miles on it and was basically brand new. I had the 600 mile maintenance done to it and stuff and everything seemed to check out ok with the shop that did it.

I was hanging out with some people tonight and they work at a hardware shop and they work on motors and stuff and they were checking out the bike and they said that it seemed to be revving high, and also it was going up and down fluctuating a little almost as if I was giving a tiny bit of throttle. It will go from 2.5k to 3k. It happens a lot when stopping at a light or something it will stay at around 3k.

Let me assure you that they choke is not on.

I don't know a lot about motors and the bike is still under warranty so I just want to be sure that anything that could be wrong with it gets checked out before the warranty runs out.

So please give me your input and please no flaming.

adjust the idle speed to 1500 rpm and then tell us how the bike runs then...

Maybe unrelated, but I had similar problems with a relatively new bike. Would return to idle veeery slowly and in general not run well at all in the lower rpms.

I ended up pulling carbs to check for clogged pilot jets but all seemed pretty clean. While the carbs were out I took the opportunity to reset the idle mixture and shim the needles while they were out.

The idle return thing turned out to be a misadjusted throttle return cable (idle cable) end at the carb end. It would sometimes bind and keep the throttle from returning properly as it was not seated squarely and the slack was misadjusted too loose from the factory, or it had slipped since delivery. All runs perfectly now.

I think idle speed (through the idle speed adjustment knob on the carb) should be set around 1300-1500 as most people do. You have checked that, right?

have you read your owners manual? it tells you how to adjust you idle speed.... turn the knob and see if it fixes your problem.

okay... it may not solve all your problems, but it's a start to where we can figure out if you do in fact have other problems. The high idle may be masking it.

yes, the dealer should have set the idle, but really, there's no reason for it to change too drastically once it was set correctly. did it idle fine before the checkup?

No it was high before the checkup.

Ok, I adjusted the idle after riding to work this morning and it went down as you guys said. Is there anything I should look out for?

Also, the bike sounds a little more mean while revving now. Is this normal?

Thank you for the help. It's not unnormal for the bike to spike sometimes with the idle (nothing drastic but the needle jumps a little)?

Maybe 1350-1500 it'll fluctuate a little.

well, it should be rock steady, but many bikes vary like this. unless it's causing you ridability problems, it seems like your bike is fine.

get out there and put some miles on it.

i rode mine from the dealer and noticed it was set for 3000 rpm-set it at 1200 with no problems so far -i have noticed on this forum that there are a lot of strange problems with these bikes i havn't encountered with other makes and models-should i get prepared for weirdness to come?

Mine fluctuates a bit. Many dealers assume it's a problem but they also forget that it's a carb'd bike just because it's sporty. I've heard others say that their dealers were insisting that there was a problem when it was just the bike's cold nature (take a while to warm up fully).

kkim Join Date: Nov 2008 Posts: Too much.	have you read your owners manual? it tells you how to adjust you idle speed.... turn the knob and see if it fixes your problem.
