1970 Honda CL450 Scrambler

Just starting on the next project after completing the Dream - a 1970 CL450 Scrambler. Another bike I've owned for about 25 years that has been sitting in a garage here and there.

Before any clean-up -

Looks like the chrome will polish-up pretty well -

Gonna need tires and a few additional parts. The tank is varnished inside, but not rusted. Compression is good. 16,000 mi, After a good bath the carbs will need to come off and be ultrasonic cleaned and rebuilt. New seat cover, paint, and decals among other things.

Cool

I rode my 72 CL350 until the head gasket blew.. I bought it for $450 with 12k on odometer.. learned how to set ignition points really well on that bike... using a book of matches.

So much fun and spare parts, I put together a sidecar rig a SL350 chassis:

Yes, that is a Ducati Monster muffler..

The CL got its first bath in about 25 or 30 years -

Carb and petcock kits are here, so the carbs will come off and get cleaned and rebuilt. Last time it ran (20+ years ago), it was running on only one 1 cylinder. Hopefully a carb cleaning and new plugs will solve that. Probably check the points too.

I've had really good results using an old matchbook to set the points on the old Hondas.

Have got it partially stripped down, cleaned the carbs, new plugs, and set the points. Need to get a couple things then I'll see how it runs.

I got the seat off of a CL350 that was sitting outside due to major engine damage.

Need to find the correct cover eventually.

This was in RI many years ago. With all the Honda's made I'm sure you'll find one at some point.

There are repo covers out there, along with a fair amount of other repo parts.

Some of the original "OEM" parts that Honda supplies these days are actually re-manufactured parts from different producers than the originals - and aren't good. Pipes that have the wrong bends and don't fit, mirrors that are shaped incorrectly and covers and tanks that are the wrong color.

I bought some "OEM" mirrors for my CA77 Dream about 20 years ago, and recently tried to install them. They don't fit. The mirror won't rotate enough to be in the proper position. I actually found some info on the Internet about it. Up until then I couldn't figure out what was going on - it was a Honda part with the correct part number, but it wasn't right.

Mr. Honda would not be happy. I hear that after he passed some of the policies for parts availability changed for the worse.

Update -

Cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, new plugs, set the points - and it fired right up!

Last time it ran was probably 20 years ago.

Electric starer was spinning, but not engaging so I kicked it over. Took about 4 or 5 kicks to fire up. Ran really well - idled smoothly and no smoke at all.

My 17 year old son was helping me. Last time it ran he wasn't even a twinkle...

EDIT: If you want to see all of the photos in this thread, you will need to install the "Photobucket Fixer" extension.

This is a link to a "Photobucket Fixer" extension for Chrome - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...giikdkpmcpkaon

There is also one available for Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...obucket-fixer/

These do work! It makes all the dead photos alive again, so you can view them as usual. It works only for the computer that has it installed, and doesn't fix the thread itself.

Winning!

More replaced photos.

After a good wash -

Currently in the middle of disassembly and refinishing/replacing worn parts.

Kinda forgot that I started this thread...

Currently gathering parts and starting some reassembly.

On closer inspection, things weren't so great -

Disassembly begins -

Making progress (blasting mostly) -

After powder coating -

Actually found out it's not really a 1970 model. At that point Honda didn't use years, just model designations, so it's a CL450K2, which was probably sold in 1969 and 1970 and maybe later depending on stock.

That's about where we are at...

cool that you have owned it for this long. its cool to bring life back into vintage vehicles, but its really cool when you have some history connected with it.
my dad and I are hoping to finish his 67 camaro and start on his old 73 Z-28 that he bought 45 years ago. i remember riding in that car when i was very young.

Some neat cars he has there!

Our next project may be the '82 Z50R my boys rode as their first real cycle.

It's sitting in my garage with the wheels off. I powder coated the wheels black because my oldest (now 23 y/o) thought it would look better. This weekend he tells me he wants me to redo them in the stock silver color because he wants it to look just like it did when he rode it.

Needs a bit of TLC and a top-end rebuild.

Here it is with him on it about age 4 or 5 -

He's been a Honda guy ever since - currently a VFR800, CRF450R, and CRF150R Supermotos. Even got a job in the motorcycle industry.

Very nice project!

What do you do about rusted chromed parts? Just blast and paint?

I've got some non-bike items that need re-finishing, but they face some rubbing and scrubbing in daily use. Not sure paint will up to that kind of abuse.

If I want to keep it chrome, and it's not terrible, I use a liquid conversion coat form Eastwood called "After Blast" with fine (0000) Steelwool to remove and neutralize the rust. I may then use Mother's Mag Polish with 0000 Steelwool then more regular polishing.

If I want to powder coat over damaged chrome I will blast it with fine steel grit then sand it to knock-down any pitting and smooth any uneven patches. That works most of the time, but the curing process at about 375/400F can raise some areas. Deep pits will usually create a small bubble in the finished coating. On the CL, the front signal stalks were chrome and really pitted, so I did my normal prep and coated them gloss black, which matches the headlight bucket on a CL.

The fenders were surface-rusted in spots, and the conversion coat neutralized it pretty well. I'll try to get a picture of the area on the rear fender that I showed in earlier posts.

I'm also using a product called "WD-40 Specialist Long Term Corrosion Inhibitor" on any bare steel or repaired chrome. It has tested very well in preventing corrosion on steel. It's kind of waxy, but I leave it set for a day or so then polish it off if I don't want any residue.

I was trained and worked as a painter for over 10 years, but for cycle and auto parts powder is far superior. I only paint when I need to. I don't paint anything that gets any amount of use/wear - it's all powder coated.

It's what I do - www.apexcustomcoating.com

Here's a before-and-after comparison with the "After Blast" and steelwool, plus some polishing -

The pitting is still there, but the rust is neutralized and rust staining removed.

That's about the best you can hope for with damaged or pitted chrome.

I'll spray it with the corrosion inhibitor and let it sit for a while before wiping it off and installing it.

Look in Youtube's URL for video-ID which is after ?v=, which is Lb3ppp_RoT0 in this case. Highlight and copy it.
Then click on "YouTube" icon in menu bar of message-editor.
Then paste it in between [ youtube ] Lb3ppp_RoT0 [ /youtube ] tags.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Polished-up the rear backing plate -

Not mirror-shine, but pretty sure that's about the right level - but it's hard to know. The bikes in the Honda ads probably had more shine, but those most likely were "photo bikes" and not production models.

Trying not to over-restore it. Won't be a museum piece when done, but it should be decent.

Working on the wheels now. Some rust on the chrome rim and corrosion on the spokes to deal with. Going to try light blasting with plastic media on the inner area of the hub to clean it up. You really can't get in there with anything else.

Got the front rim and hub polished-up to an acceptable level -

Used some plastic media to blast-clean the area of the hub between the spokes, as you really can't get in there. Worked ok. A lot better than it was. Spent quite a bit of time with 0000 steel wool and Mothers Mag polish to get a decent shine on the chrome rim. Ended-up using a 3" 3000-grit sanding pad with polish to cut through some light corrosion on the hub, which worked better than steel wool and was a bit softer on the aluminum.

I used the Eastwood Afterblast and steel wool on the inside of the rim, which was quite rusted in spots. Will put the WD-40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor on before mounting the tires.

On to the rear wheel. I'll have to remember to get a "before" shot of it. It's not great, but should be fine after some cleaning and polishing. Hopefully.

Rear wheel isn't great -

Some gouges in the side of the rim in one spot when some !#$%^& changed the tire with a screwdriver and a chisel (or similar inappropriate tool).

Got new bearings and seals on order. Will need a sprocket as well.

Surprising how older Hondas had some overly-complicated designs. The rear hub and sprocket mounting includes studs/nuts, a snap ring, and some kind of threaded cover (under the black rubber cover) you have to remove to get to the bearings. My '64 Dream has some overly-complicated designs as well. I tend to think of the old stuff as "simple", but not always...
