Reusable ear protection on your keys

Up until recently, I've been a big proponent of those big 'ol boxes of 3M foam ear plugs you get at the hardware store. And, I still am. But, there's a better alternative.

Reusable ear plugs:

They go on a little case on your keys, so you always have them before you hop on the bike. the only times I haven't worn earplugs were all because I didn't have them handy at the time or I'd simply forgotten until I was halfway down the street.

I bought these specific ones:

Linky-poo

As some of the reviews stated, they don't seem to work when you put them in at first. but, I loaded up audacity, recorded some static, and set the gain and my computer's volume to a painful level when over-the-ear headphones are worn. Then, I wore the earplugs with the headphones. It was comfortably audible and not painful at all. You can try this yourself, if you don't believe me. Just find some loud noises on YouTube.

I don't know how they work, but they seem to make loud sounds quiet, and have little effect on moderate to low volume sounds. but, I would recommend them. It doesn't even have to be this specific set of ear-plugs, too. As far as I can tell, they're all more or less the same.

Please, be nice to your earholes.

I don't ride without them either. I keep a zip loc baggy in my tank bag full of them so if anyone needs some they can have them.

I've started keeping a lil zippy-bag full of the lil foam ones in one of my jacket pockets, too. I like this keychain dealio though, because reusability and the case has a little extra room in it, so I put a tiny bag of claritin, some ibuprofen, and a bandaid in there with a cotton-ball blocking it off, with the ear plugs on top. so I can dump out the ear-plugs without having to dump out the other stuff, too.

Hmm wonder if these would be the ticket for the range and riding all on one keychain...

I like the idea of reusable ones but they irritate the hell out of my ears. I buy a box of 200 individually packaged earplugs and just keep a handful in every bag I own. I always have a few pouches of essential motorcycle stuff I take with me so I am never without a bunch of earplugs. I would just stuff a few extra pairs in your jacket or under the seat if you don't carry bags all the time. Individually packaged earplugs are definitely way more convenient to hand out to people too. I freely give away earplugs cuz I figure it's such a small cost that does a lot of good for others.

The yellow hard-ish foam ones? Yeah, you can re-use them. They're kind of built that you don't have to, but you certainly can. Nothing that prevents them from being reused. They're just cheap. Not as nice as the ones marked "reusable." And the little packet they come in is cheap, too.

Mine, too. I'm trying to find earplugs that I don't hate.

I end up using the yellow-foam horrible ones when working concerts, in part because it's what we have on hand, and because I haven't found a set that I like yet. If I find ones I like, I'll bring my own to work when it's a concert night.

I mean, they're reusable but not forever like the rubber ones. I use foam ones a few times until they get too dirty or don't feel like they're blocking sound as well. I change out the set I'm using once or twice a week. Fresh earplugs feel nicer anyway.

I get my earplugs from Earplug Superstore. They have sample packs of foam earplugs so you can find the shape and style that fits you best before committing to an entire box of them.

Husband got a giant box of all different kinds of earplugs and I have tried a few. Most are far too big for my ears, and even the ones that fit.... I just don't like the feel of them. So I'm trying.

Have you tried the Surefire EP3 sonic defenders?

I find them very comfortable.

http://www.surefire.com/ep3-sonic-defenders.html

They also have a little vent hole you can leave open that is supposed to allow in quiet sounds and block the loud ones, or you can plug it for better protection.

I originally wore the little orange foamies, but hated them. Never fit right, didn't block sound, irritating. Then I picked up some 3M Corded Reusables (love the cord!) but those are only rated to 25 dB.

Tried some clear NoNoise next, rated to 29 dB. Liked those, but they kept tearing and would get all groady before too long.

Ended up tweeting a request for anyone who had used Etymotic Research plugs and got a response back from EarLove who sold me on their funny response of "We're the same product, but our packaging is cooler." Been using those ever since. Used to use the little keychain tube thing, but now just leave them looped around my neck or wrap the cord around my camera on the side of the helmet.

I do keep a baggie of orange foamies in my tailbag for anyone who needs one. So far, have helped riders out enough times I need to restock my supply.

I'm currently using these: http://www.earplugstore.com/radians-deflector-bx.html

They're small enough to be comfortable for me and quite soft while being NRR 33. I'm actually almost through my current box of 200 so it's about to time to order another. I keep handing them out to people at shows lol.

I've heard of it but I've never witnessed it myself

There's always been a box of disposable earplugs whenever I've gone. I bring my own.

I mean, I wouldn't recommend it; after a few ear-infections from scratching my inner ear with a Nintendo DS stylus, I make sure the stuff I put into my ears is clean.

Obviously not a good scratching instrument since it's breaking skin to cause the infections

Most corded ones don't work well in my helmet... the cord attachments stick out and create pressure, or the cord comes straight out of the plug and pulls on it when I put my helmet on.

These have light yarn that comes out of the plug at a right angle, so they're perfect.

The other beef I have is that lots of the foamies expand too fast... I can't get them seated before they balloon up. These are stiff and expand slowly.

Tried 'em on this morning's commute and couldn't be happier.

3M 1110, by the way.
