AN 18 year old boy who spent eight months riding from South America to North America for charity has been honoured a reception at the House of Commons.

Oliver Plunket started his journey in Ushuaia, Argentina in December last year and rode 24,000 miles to Prudhoe Bay Anchorage in Alaska.

He was granted an army scholarship at Sandhurst in 2010 and decided to take a year away to raise money for charity.

The journey - completed on his XT660Z Yamaha TÉNÉRÉ – was for the charity Fisher House UK who have networks of comfort homes in the United States ‘where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment’. The UK opened its first Fisher House in April 2013 close to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Plunket wrote a blog detailing the ride that took him through multiple countries such as Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Canada.

When we spoke to him, he explained that the chicken on the front of his bike was a mascot, there to replace the live chicken he originally intended to bring with him.

He has raised £98,114 for the charity through his JustGiving page, just short of his £100,000 target.
