DSpinler's DIY - eBay LED strip install

I started to ask these questions in my original thread here ( http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=95746 ) but moved to a new thread since this is more than just testing, and so I have a spot to show the results and install steps I take this weekend (Fingers crossed)

So I'm planning on doing the install this weekend... and now my lack of comprehensive electrical knowledge is dawning on me. I've installed lights on truck and hard wired radar detectors to the 12V... but nothing this complicated.

Here's my plan, tell me what I'm gonna screw up:

Positive power is going to be received by splicing into the running lights (still need to figure out which wire it is.) and then to a fuse. From there it will run to two (four?) quick disconnects for the wiring going to the fairings where I will run them in parallel, with the negative wire on the lights going to a wire that will be grounded on the frame....

Am I making any sense? I used some paint skillz to help, but may have made it worse....

Um....yeah.... lol. Silly me.

I imagine the switch would be wired between the fuse and the disconnects, yes?

Yeah that would work. Fuse should be first I think...

Power

Switch
relay
then what you are powering

I dont think you need a relay though

Never used one before, but from what I hear you would use it for a direct battery powered setup, but still keeping them from being turned on when the bike is off, right?

yeah because the relay would constantly have power on the one side

yeah as long as that wire constantly has power when the ignition is on.

If you tie into the brake light running light, no need for a switch!

just because it has power all of the time I dont think he wants them to be illuminated all the time. Hence the need for a switch...

Ohh I see. I read too fast and I assumed that these were going to be extra running lights. >< Missed that part, hahaha.

You can use the relay from your brake running light and just put a secondary switch really anywhere in the circuit between power and ground. Generally, though, it's easiest and best to put the switch right after the fuse as noted by massacremasses. But even then, you probably don't even need a fuse unless you plan to pull a lot more power. If you tie into the Brake light running light, you'll already have a fuse.

So, attempted install tonight... ran led strips in series, not parallel. As soon as four get hooked up, they no longer light....

The only other difference is that I am drawing power from the licence plate lamp, which is on the same circuit as the running lights, yes?

maybe thats not enough power? not sure why they wouldnt work in series unless one was not working and couldnt pass power...
