Helmet Help - Flip up Sunshield

I was looking at getting a new helmet, and I was interested in a helmet with the built in flip up sunshield similar to:

HJC IS-16

HJC FS-10

Scorpion EXO-1000

I currently switch back and forth between a tinted shield and clear shield, but can't always carry them both with me so if I go out around sunset I have to deal with the glare. Most people would just wear sunglasses under their helmet, but I wear glasses and do not want to get prescription sunglasses.

Does anyone have any of these helmets, or knows of any alternatives? I know they make the pin lock shields so I could always use that, but I like the ability to change without stopping.

I also wish this feature could be used on the EXO-700 because I would like to have the Hi-Viz Yellow version of that.

Newenough currently has some HJC helmets "reduced"! Check them out:

Thanks for the link Gary. Not sure how I feel about the photochromic visor. The electronic one seems cool, but I can't find it on their site.

Sam, I saw them there, but actually the IS-16 is not reduced, but on sale for less than the FS-10. That is what originally got me to thinking about this.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I like the Flip up chin. If you don't mind me asking what was the price on that one?

For some reason the grey helmet reminds me of that old movie The Rocketeer....

well, maybe not.

Haha the things you smokers will do

Not a consideration for me, but makes some sense. The IS-16 is $137 in white or black and if you work it right and order with something that has free shipping you can get it shipped for free as well.

I have the exact Scorpion EXO-1000 that you have pictured above. I do like the flip down sun visor. It is easy to get to and easy to move up and down while you are riding. Personally I wish the visor was a little darker.

Todd, thanks for your input. I'm going to have to try some out. My local dealer doesn't carry Scorpion, but I stopped by today and was able to try both the HJC helmets. The IS-16 seems to be a really nice helmet, and the flip down visor was really easy to use. I'd like to try the Scorpion, but for the price of the HJC ($137), its really tempting.

I know what you mean. I didn't really want to pay $250 for the EXO-1000 but in the end I am happy with the helmet and I guess that is all that matters

I own the HJC FS-10 and my husband has the Scorpion helmet. Both visors are easy to swap out. It just depends on fit and price point. Try them on, my husband had to go to a larger size with the Scorpion than what he usually gets, it was a snug fit.

Thanks Trista. Do you find the inner visor to be pretty convenient? I tried the FS-10 on earlier today, and it fit pretty well.

It is so easy to swap out my dark smoke visor with the clear stock one. And if I know that I am going to be out after sunset I just pack the other visor in my bag. Nothing to swapping them out.

I had thought about getting the EXO 1000, but at the time, $$ was kinda tight and I couldn't see buying that much helmet before I took the MSF and knew that I was going to like riding. The 400 I have is great, although I do wear sunglasses with it.

NICUninja, you mentioned that hubby had get a larger size with the Scorpion, oh boy, I had to get a XS to get one to fit. Don't remember about the other brands that I tried on.

How does that other brands of helmets compare to the Scorpion size wise? anybody?

I had to buy an XL exo-700 to get it to fit. I usually take a large but it was way too tight. My shoei rf-1000 is a large and it fits me fine.

Cheez, when I got the XS, the dude at the counter mentioned that I needed to go smaller and the XS was tight. I feels better now that it has broken in.

When I was trying on the Scorpions I though I was going to get the XL. The salesman talked me into going one size smaller. He said it would be very tight to start but that it would loosen up. He was exactly right. For about the first month the L I got was very tight. Now that it has broken in a little it fits just right.

with me, the large would not let me slip my glasses on without a struggle and even after I got them on, they were so tight the glasses wouldn't sit on my face properly.

Plus, the top of my head was ultra tight. It all boils down to head shape, I think, which is a good reason to try a helmet on for sizing before buying, if you can.

Good point Kelly. Different head shapes definitely play into helmet selection. I know my car racing helmet is a S, but S motorcycle helmets are all way too tight around my forehead. Wearing them for just a little bit I get a hotspot on my forehead.

I think I've decided on the IS-16. White would be the next best thing to a super bright color right?

I was also thinking of this with maybe som reflective striping over some of the design, but it wouldn't be as visible in the daytime.

my joe rocket jacket has a pocket just for the face shield. It's on the right side and hugs your right ribcage. It has saved me so many nights.

Just for thought.
