Gutted harness issue

Ok I am putting a 2001 ninja 250 engine into a go kart. Im trying to gut the harness down to run and charge! Have power to the coils but not getting spark. Cant seem to find a diagram with the same colors I have in my harness to the cdi. Can anyone help?

Welcome, Adam!

While I have no direct knowledge about it, I've read that the resistor has to be in the circuit for the engine to run: some sort of theft deterrent (most hotwire thieves don't know about needing the resistor). If I'm incorrect, a more knowledgeable member will chime in.

You need gray. Ign 12v + 100 ohm resistor to gray wire to cdi turns it on to give spark

There you have it! You need a 100 ohm resistor rated at 180 milliamps or more (and 14 or so volts or more).

First three color stripes should be brown/black/brown. If there's a 4th stripe, it ought to be brown, red, gold, or silver (in that order of preference).

Or he could use some the OEM ignition switch too, nice to have a key on a toy like that.

Just follow the wiring schematics, and start simple, and work your way up

You've never hot wired a car before?

Okay time to use that multimeter, power goes in, power out to the gray wire, or run a continuity check, key in run position, one lead on the gray, then start hunting til you have reading.

Also if there are differences between schematic and yours, you can easily find them out with same procedure.

Good luck mate

It's not as hard as people make it out to be, but patience will be your best tool, when doing this, take your time, if you get worked up, take a break.

Remember it's a inanimate object, it has no feelings, or need to piss you off, it's just there.

Been there many times, just remember your final goal, and that usually calms me down.

True, but you got it figured out now.

Can't wait to see this go-cart, and a how-to write up maybe?
