Cold Weather Helmets

With cold weather slowly approaching I would like to hear from people in the northern regions of the U.S. and my friends in Canada on what helmets do you like for the cold. Please post pics and/or web site links. Thanks in advance to all for your help.

I have ridden in the mid 30's with a balaclava under the same helmet I wear in the summer- no problem

Yeah I wear an under armour balaclava whenever it gets cold (below 10 degrees C). Usually at this temp, my eyes start watering up and having something there to keep the tears from rolling down my face is nice.

It's also effective at keeping your face warm. The two helmets that I've had so far (Shark RSX and Suomy Vandal) are both terrible at keeping cold air out. I honestly don't see many options in terms of a stand alone, cold weather helmet.

+1 on the Clava! I have been doing that on the cold mornings going to school (in the 40s so far, fahrenheit). Has been working great! I agree about the eye-wating thing. When I have sunglasses on its not bad, but when it is too dark for them, I think I might need to figure something out. I guess if nothing else Ill just get some clear glasses with sealing foam around the edges, to keep out the wind.

Does Scorpion's "dual pane" visors make any difference. I'm thinkin they might since they are structured for snowmobiling. (re: eye issues)
Personally, I use a neck gator and put in the Respro Foggy when it gets real cold out and I have a problem with fogging. This keeps everything nice and warm inside for me anyway. Oh and don't forget to close the vents, or there is really no point to having all the other stuff on.... <grin>

Balaclava, neck gator or a scarf.

I use a wind stopping neck gator from REI and usually wear a skull cap (Under-armor) and this works well down into the upper 20's F. I have a Scorpion helmet and have wondered about using the snowmobile shields. When it gets cold I also switch to contacts because I have a terrible time with my glasses fogging up.

The respro foggy mask will do wonders for cold or wet weather fogging problems.

A full on snowmobile helmet is probably the best bet for cold, but I don't know if you can find one rated appropriately for crashing on pavement.

Add some cat-crap on the inside of your visor, and no fogging! Even down to negative numbers!

I also use a silk balaclava, and a scarf. And my mommy made me a sweater, with a really high collar, which I rock underneath my leather jacket in below-freezing temps..... Now where is that picture....

Edit: Found the picture....

I have a BRP-branded Scorpion helmet that is SNELL and DOT certified, but came with full snow accessories.

I don't think any helmet is going to be a "cold weather helmet". Get something like the UnderArmour below, except make sure it's one piece (the face part isn't made to come down) and with a much longer neck than the crappy UA one.

I know that some helmet makers make snowmobile versions of the same helmets they sell for street use. GMAX comes to mind. Their snowmobile versions have dual panes and heating elements.

And remember, you can start inexpensive. I paid 4.99 for my Clava at Academy. Hell, sometimes I just wear a hoodie under my jacket and put the helmet on over my hood and that seems to stop the breeze that tends to creep through the helmet. Then something around my neck / face (if you aren't sure what you want, start with a cheap-o scarf from Walmart or Dollar General or something) and I'm good to go.

*edit*

And Spooph, you cannot fathom my current envy...
