Yup, cold-weather riding is doable, but the right gear is critical. If you get a chance to try decent heated gear, you'll never go back. Gerbing full jacket liner + variable controller, and you're set for years and years.

The Latigo boots are named after a famous canyon road in southern california, as far as I know it's pronounced Latt-uh-go.

The biggest cold-weather gotcha, once the gear is all sorted, is what you mentioned re: ice and snow. The worst kind is the not very visible ice that pops up from time to time, when the weather gets right around freezing. At some point,. there just isn't enough traction for any motorcycle/motorcyclist to deal with, and hopefully you can find another ride, or as you mentioned, classes will be cancelled much of the time anyway.
