Its simple... GREEN... and all clean

So Last weekend I propped Gizmo up in the wheel chock and decided to wash her then clean the chain. (Has become a weekly thing :yes )



I still havent found a cleaner that I liked that I would eat all the grease off but not harm my paint (matte black is a bitch :no: ) I was looking around the house and found a bottle of simple green. I've used simple green in the past to clean up some grease and I remembered that it wasnt a harsh chemical so I gave it a shot



I sprayed down the front and rear sprocket, the rims and the underbelly with the concentrate right from the bottle. For the rest of the bike I used this nifty little guy:

Filled the container full of the concentrate and had it mixed into the water and sprayed down the entire bike (using the "shower" setting on the nozzle)



The trick with simple green is to let it sit and spray again (or so I have found) it does a very good job eating pretty much everything... but the paint :yes :yes :yes



While I was cleaning I noticed some rust dripping off my chain (it has 17k miles on it, so its time for a new one... or I thought) so I decided to spray more concentrated simple green on it and let it sit, did this twice then sprayed the chain down with the water/simple green mix, then just water. I dried the chain off and let it sit so all the water would evaporate, then I lubed her up and realized Ive never seen the chain this gold since I first purchased it



I sprayed her down one more time with water/simple green and scrubbed the bike and rims, then did a last water spray down and dried her

hmm... I'll have to pick up some simple green next time i see it. i had a hell of a time brushing away at my chain last weekend.

I've always used Simple Green on motorcycle and bicycles and all sorts of stuff. Great product!!! But I've since run out of concentrate to use on the chain. Funny, because that's my cleaner of choice for bicycle chains... My ninja chain is grotey as hell.

Great idea on the mixer/sprayer. I need to look into that.

Don't make a habit of leaving Simple Green to soak on your paint. It will eat your clear eventually.

For an occasional cleaning, I think it would probably be okay.

Otherwise, I am pretty wary about products that aren't developed specifically for cleaning chains and stated to be O-ring safe.

As for O-ring safe? Bro, you can drink this **** (Non toxic) I really dont see it eating down an O-ring any more then some other chemical specifically made for that

All I know is that it works great for cleaning bicycle chains, and it hasn't killed the clear coat on anything I use it on yet. Just dilute it a bit for paint and remember to wax the paint once in a while if you're worried about it.

And as a cleaner/degreaser that is alkaline, you want to avoid getting it on exposed aluminum for prolonged periods since it advances corrosion as the US Army found out many years back. Since it's a degreaser it can also dry out rubber parts prematurely and eat away at the wax hence for the same reason is why you shouldn't wash your vehicles with dish soap. If you do, dilute it and make sure to rinse very thoroughly and then apply a coat of wax again. For reasons above, Simple Green makes a specific aircraft cleaner formula that they state is safe for use on all metals, plastics, rubber and vinyl.

I worked at a motorcycle rental shop for a summer, and we used simple green to clean the whole fleet. Those bikes were washed after every rental; it always worked great, and had no adverse effects. Great product!

I've never used it on my bike yet, but I've spot cleaned the carpets in my cars with Simple Green and it works great. My chain looks corroded and nasty as hell, I just bought the bike a couple months ago too.......

Worked great on my chain. Cleaned it real well, rinsed with water as I washed the bike, let it sit and dry for a couple hours, lubed and wiped off excess. Looks real nice!
