About to buy a butt-ugly 2009 250r....
Hi everyone. First time poster here.
I used to have a 2006 250r, and then I stopped riding for a few years. I recently got the itch again after moving back to NM, and my wife convinced me to get a Honda Rebel for the "safety factor" of having a cruiser vs. a sports bike. I had it for literally a week and then sold it. I missed the Ninja feel and have been on the prowl for a while. So tomorrow I'm going to look at a 2009 250r with 8,000 miles on it. The bad thing is that it's hideous. So my question is, how hard will it be to replace the tank, front fender, and all fairings? I want to do it a bit at a time, kind of like a summer project. I have no experience working on motorcycles other than changing the oil and washing it. I see a lot of 2009 fairing kits on eBay. Do those include all the nuts and bolts, or is it expected that I will use the old ones? And how can I confirm that this is, in fact, a 2009? Thanks for reading! |

A LOT cheaper.
Thnking it twice, take the fairings off, clean them up with alcohol then plastidip them, take the extra time to sand them and it'll look better, look at my album on ninjette. This link is good. http://imgur.com/a/f4AjO |

Ok so it's basically a spray paint for matte color, right? Doesn't it look like crap though? How even-handed would you have to be with it? Do you see streaks, etc?

I might try it, and see how it holds up. I do like the shiny look of real paint, though, and I don't think you can do a clear coat over this stuff....
But it might do while I save up for the real fairings. So eBay fairings are no good? That's discouraging. |

You apply it as you would spray paint but once the plasti dip dries, you are able to peel it off without any damage to the paint that is underneath. Go check it out on YouTube. My brother and I actually just did this to his wheels on his Mini Cooper this weekend and it turned out great for only 35$

And since it peels off easily, won't it peel off on its own easily? |

Primer is optional and if I remember correctly primer might actually make it harder to peel off. We simply washed the wheels good then applied about 5 coats.
You shouldn't have to mask anything because the fairings are easy enough to remove so I would take them off. We waited about 15-20 minutes between each coat then let it dry over night. Also I wouldn't worry too much about it coming off on its own, many people have dipped their bumpers, wheels, and some ricers around town do their whole cars. It's hard to describe it until you use it in person. |

If you wanna get fancy with the plastidip, they offer a glossifier on dipyourcar.com among other effects. I plasti-dipped part of my ninja, you can see the pics by going to the album on my profile.

Forgive me for I am a n00b, but what is the advantage of plasti dip rather than just spray painting? from the brief search and youtube search it looks like anyone can use it to get professional results whereas spray paint will take time and effort? anyway now you guys have me thinking about doing it to my bike!
Luis: Ha, I agree that bike has a weird color scheme going on. I don't know if you've done a search yet or not but fairings are expensive, especially if you buy them brand new. Yea you can get used ones on ebay, but they'd be used just like the ones already on the bike, and you'd have to find all matching ones. I know the gas tank for my pregen ninja is around $500 dollars. Half the price of what I paid for my bike lol. |

Won't plastidip start to come off after a little while? It isn't permanent

Okay, well I fixed the problem: I'm not getting that bike, lol.
Seemed like too much hassle and I do want a permanent solution. I've decided to go with more a more expensive but more normal 2009. More normal, although not quite totally normal. It's the red one but for some reason has a white upper fairing. Go figure! Goodbye, Rainbow Ninja. Hope you find a happy home!! |

wrap it
Take it to one of those vinyl sign guys and have them vinyl wrap it in any color and any design you want. A professional job looks like paint, is durable and is thousands of dollars cheaper. Wardie

I'd say repaint it, but honestly just getting a slightly more expensive bike is probably cheaper in the end with time and money involved.
So...good choice. xP |

The first bike looked like someone tracked it. It has a 1 piece race tail, no mirrors, no passenger pegs etc.
Usually the first thing mix-matched fairings tells me is that it's been dropped/crashed/damaged. It's very rare that someone will just wake up one day and decided "Hey I'm just going to paint one fairing section a completely different colour." |

With the new bike, if you want to have it all one color, pull off the fairings and see how much maaco will charge to paint it. Lot cheaper than new parts, and they warranty their work for like, 5 years or something.

Yeah, I decided to go with a more expensive, but flawless bike. It is painted a pearl black and has custom blue decals on it. The battery was weak and the chain needed replacing, so it won't be ready to be picked up til Thursday.
But way better than the clown bike. |
