lever-guards pros & cons

So AFM will require lever-guards on both sides next season. Of course they won't say anything about this until tech-inspection at round-1.

Anyone have any data and feedback on various brands and design features out there? Figured I'd get started on that while bike's apart waiting for pistons.

When I get home, I can share a website with cheap products from China, but takes almost a month to get here. I am probably going to pick up an oil fill cap, drain plug and preload adjusters for less then $40

Cool thanks!!!

Are they all pretty much same? Seems it would be better to have one-piece design? Looks like multiple-part assemblies with adjustability may be weaker? Or open possibility of fixing screws being loose?

here is my experience, there are 2 styles, the ones that fit the bar end, and ones that clamp to the bar, i have the ones that fit inside the bar end, like the photos above. hose you seam to grind off on a lowside. lost 2 last season.
the other that clamps on is what my boy runs, he is still running the the original.

For cost of one Vortex or Woodcraft clamp-on lever-guard, I can get 20 of those AliExpress ones. I'll split difference and order 10 AliExpress ones to start

Will these fit on the stock handle bars on the N300?

They look like they have the expanding system that requires a hollow bar, while the stock handle bars have a screw at the ends.

You remove factory bar-end weight/cap to install.

I've heard people say "The good ones will protect your levers in a crash." That's wrong, there isn't a single lever protector that holds up to a crash, even if you get the original Dion Device.

The adjustable ones pictured above worked well for me. It's just enough to protect the lever in a mid corner touch.

Thanks! How do you take it out? Pulling? Or is it screwed in?

I think on factory bars, you just unscrew completely and pull it out.

get brake lever guards designed for a mountain bike

we use them at NJMP and save crazy money. They break in a crash but they hold up against bumping. Personally regardless of rules I would want a lever guard on the bike to feel comfortable.

https://www.amazon.com/Profile-Desig...5189171&sr=8-3

There was some trial and error with these, a team member took the time to find ones long enough with the right cut. We run them on the end of 13.5" clip-on bars

Ooh. I like those. A bit bummed I got Woodcrafts already. Oh well, if I need to replace...

I just bought these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clutch-Brak...72.m2749.l2649

They look good. I haven't installed them yet.
$17 for the pair. They arrived in 11 days from China.
Will update when I install them.

I have concerns.

I've had bar-end mirrors using that same mechanism for attaching to the inside of the bar. They rattled loose pretty quickly and rotated. More expensive units will have a better way of preventing rotation. Also, Chinese aluminum. They'll probably pass tech for club racing, but I wouldn't count on them saving a pinky in a crash, and they might not even stay in place to actually protect your levers from incidental contact.

I have the Woodcrafts and they've held up to one fast slide already. The plastic bit might need replacing next crash, it's a little weak. But Woodcraft offers replacements.

If I wanted to be cheap, I'd go with the mountain bike bullhorn handles somebody linked earlier. In fact, I think those might be the sturdiest solution I've seen yet.

The bar ends themselves aren't screwed in. A bolt goes through them and there's an expander inside the bar, providing a solid friction fit. You loosen the screw and the plug comes out easily. The trick is getting the screws loose.

These screws are secured with red Loctite. You need, at minimum, an impact driver with the proper (large) Philips bit to get 'em out, and maybe some heat too... or you'll mess up the screw head and have to drill 'em out.
