2005, chasing idle

Bought a 2005 and didn’t want to idle below about 3000. Cleaned the tank, fuel lines, checked fuel from peacock. Pulled carbs removed low speed jets. Got them spraying gas both straight thru and all the vents. Soaked bodies in ultrasonic cleaner (20 min with heat). Blew out the passages from the front, flowers cabcleaner great. Set flat level, checked needle valve. Everything is prime clean. Put new pure gas ( E0). Starts easy, runs great. Used the big knob under carbs to set idle. Idleing great (set to 1500 because my son is brand new to m/c clutches. Bike runs great, idles great for about 3 days. Suddly stalls every time you close the throttle. Reset idle using big knob to bring it back up to about 1500. Bike runs great. Slow fast, just the way you want it. So I take it out today, 20 min into ride, idle suddenly at 4000! So I stop a shopping center, use big knob to bring idle back down, and bike is running and idleing just fine

What the F?

My Son points out that there maybe a reason that they have that big knob to set idle, every other bike we have had (I’ve had and worked on lots!) an idle stop that you had to use a screwdriver to adjust.

So, is it common for thesebikes to have to reset the idle all the time? If not, any idea why we are having all this trouble?

I have checked fo air leaks in the carb boots ( the old fashion way... sprayed a littlestarting fluid under the boots then at the boots, no change in engine speed so no air leaks. I have checked the cables no change in speed if I turn the bars and I can shake the cables and nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

I'd check the screws that hold the adjustment cable to the carbs to be sure they are tight, and the threads on the right carb that the adjustment cable threads into. If not those I'd make sure the bracket with the idle stop is tight on the butterfly shaft, then, that the butterfly screws (butterfly to shaft) are tight. If it's none of those I'd look for an exorcist.

If your valve clearances have gotten too small, this can happen. It's not definitely the cause, but it's what made mine act that way.

Partially obstructed idle mixture passages possibly?

Sticky slides?
