Does anyone like bugs?
A friend just gave me Cecropia moth eggs:
They turn into these: and then those turn into these: My 3yo girl and 5yo boy are thrilled! My daughter wasn't thrilled till I started calling the eggs "Baby Butterflies" though. Needed the baby word in there. And none of the "It puts the Moth in the Basket" please.. - Joe |

I was thinking. I'm going to let most of the adults from the hatch free to make more. So if you're ever near Lansing, MI and bugzilla splats on your face shield you can thank me

No problem! If you're a squid with no face shield you can just open your mouth and have an instant meal!

Wow cool!
I used to 'raise' dillweed caterpillars/butterflies as a kid in Colorado. Haven't done much other than nuture some random preying mantis egg pods I've found since. Always loved bugs, even though my entomology has gotten rather rusty and wasn't all that strong to begin with. Just a couple weeks ago I encountered my first Cecropia moth out at the research station where I do most of my experiments. It was just chillin' in the tall grass. I stopped what I was doing & snapped a handful of pics on my cell because it was just so beautiful and huge. Thanks for identifying that for me, definitely could bear to see some more photos when they hatch.

We had one on the window at work last week. It just sat there all day. They don't move much in the day because they are a flying feast for any bird. I saw it, got a flashback to when I was a kid. I used google and tried to order like 24 eggs for $10 from some online bug auction. The guy was sold out. I bitched about it. It turns out a guy 2 cubes over from me has a dad that raises them. I came into work today and he gave me "24" eggs. I started counting that pic I took and it looks like 50 Fun times for my kids. They eat about anything, maple, poplar, any fruit trees, elm, birch, I'm good to go food wise for them. If anyone wants info on them look at http://www.treenut.net/left/mothman.html and the links at the bottom are a good start.

Love most bugs but from a slightly squeamish distance. Have big Lunas and Cecropias here too. Big fan of the swallowtails. just plant a basket of curly parsley and voila! your own supply of giant beautiful swallowtails.
Found some huge caterpillers on a turtlehead plant (Chelone sp.) at the green house today - looked them up and they're bad guys - bummer. Definitely post pics as things move along. Nice job with your wording with your daughter. I keep telling myself that spiders are not spiders but mosquito traps! |

Personally, I think they're all pretty fascinating individually (anatomically and aesthetically) and as a collective. Reading/seeing some of the societal structure that a lot of species of insect have is pretty mind boggling. But that's not to say they don't also freak me out. If I were to be walking around my house doing whatever and came across an insect that would be gorgeous if I were observing it from a controlled environment, I would most definitely flip a ****. It pretty much comes down to the context in which I encounter them haha. |

I'm with Rick. I can't stand bugs, rodents, and chihuahuas. Although I don't mind arachnids, dragonflies, or butterflies.

On another note, I hit a huge moth the other day and didn't realize until I reached my destination an hour later that it got half lodged in my helmet vent and was still alive, lol. I pulled it out of my vent then tossed it into the air yelling "Fly away, be free!"; I thought it was gonna make it until a split second later it went into a hair-pined nosedive and thumped against the hard asphalt.

Yea I cant stand bugs as well. Except add everything Tri's ok with to my cant stand list. Insects in general induce instant kill reflexes in me. Rodents I can handle. Although, those photos you posted are quite colorful. Did you take them?

You would kill a dragonfly? Vietnam is full of them. I used to love running through the fields to catch them as a kid.
