Dead Ignition
I ride my bike (2009 250r) daily to and from class. This morning my ignition button stopped working. Odd. I tried it again and it worked, but that was the last time. After class I had to push my bike up a hill and push start to get the engine going.
I'm coming up on 16k miles, and there is no clicking noise when I push the ignition button like there would be if my battery was low. Edit: I checked the fuses, no problems there. Has anyone had this happen before? What could the problem be? A loose cable somewhere? Or does something need to be replaced? Help me Ninjetters!! Check the most common causes first: the battery connections and the battery itself (take it to any autoparts store for a free check).
If the bike lives outdoors, the starting or emergency switches may be dirty or corroded. This thread has been discussing a similar problem: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104619

Thanks for the reply Motofool. I don't have any of the proper tools to really fiddle around with this and check the electrical systems. I think I'm going to have to just take it into a shop

Check the diodes on top of the battery box. There are 2. If you switch their place and the starter turns, bingo. It will not start since the bad diode is now on the other circuit but you will know what's up.

Check your wiring harness. Pay special attention to where the harness runs through the hangers and along side the frame in the mid-section of the bike. Had a shorting problem this summer with taillights/dash lights and found several spots along the harness showing signs of wear. Retaped and added extra zip-tyes, in one spot (where harness crosses from one side to other under the tank) had to reseal wires with liquid tape and rewrap with tape.
