Here's a video that illustrates the benefits of a shimmed needle

Link to original page on YouTube.
Thanks @NevadaWolf for showing me how to use this function lol

Just putting it out there, talks about the benefits of shimmed needles, the lack of significant differences of it and tapered needles, main jet openings, and pilot jet openings WITH ILLUSTRATIONS -- which is always nice. This video made it clearer to me how the needles functions in the carbs.

it works for me, interesting video.

question, can this be done on FI bikes too? Or does the FI system not allow for a similar change?

FI bikes don't use carb needles, for FI you would need to change the fuel injection map.

Very informative video. I bookmarked the website.
I hate a computer generated voice but the info was worth it.

That's that power commander snazz, right?

Ugh regardless, the FI owners are so lucky. Don't they readjust themselves when slipons are put on or air filter's changed?

For a slipon if the bike runs fine no need to really remap, if you replace the air filter, yes a remap is needed. Power Commander is usual what everyone uses on the FI bikes. I know over the winter I get to have fun doing this since I am pulling the carbs and throwing an EFI on my 250. Mine has a K&N High Flow filter and a Danmoto XG-1 slipon.

noob question: what's the benefit of having more fuel flow?

Nothing in and off itself.

The reason to change your fuel flow is to optimize the fuel air ratio. If you increase the fuel flow without increasing the amount of air you'll run rich, too much fuel.

When you install an air filter or a full exhaust system and in some cases a slip on you increase the amount of air the engine gets. The more air it gets the more fuel it needs.

So if you add more air and additional fuel you can increase power.

You are welcome.

I clicked the little calculator thing to see what that site recommends for me. At my home elevation (4000 ft) it recommends a kit to shim the needle. But at the elevations I tend to ride at (6000-8000) no kit is needed.

Trouble with living in a region with large elevation changes. I can go anywhere from 1000-9000 ft in a single ride. Guess I'll leave it alone.
