Two things I fear in this world. Earthquakes and Spiders!
Good luck Hi. Let's hope it just rolls on through with a lil swell.

I hope this does not mean that the U.S. West coast will have a major quake next.

We have had our share of rumbling lately.
Riverside has been on a constant vibe between all of these massive earthquakes.

We had a series of mid "4's" last week followed by lots of aftershocks. We were also moving pretty good just around the time of the Haitian ordeal as well.

It's coming. I have my water and supplies stocked up. I went through the 94 Northridge quake. I was 7miles away in the next town over of Simi Valley. Those things don't mess around! I was literally thrown out of bed before I even woke up! Lots of people say earthquakes are fun, but I know better than to laugh and smile when the ground is moving beneath your feat with authority. At not other time do you feel quite so small!

I have been through several earthquakes when I lived in Long Beach and I agree they are not fun at all.

I just spoke to my uncle in SoCal... he's battening down his hatches. It's scary... the weather and everything lately. The East coast hit with two gnarley blizzards in a matter of 2 weeks, and now a huge tsunami in the pacific, the gods aren't happy. I just read an article that said 122 people were killed in Chile, and the toll will likely rise because of the quake... my heart goes out to all those people, it's terrible, mother nature is a scary, scary thing.

EQ's are the only real threat Southern California has to be worried about besides the drought. The funny thing is, not many people seem to care about it much. All these buildings they "build to code" here are laughable too when you're talking something like recent times about a 7.0 or higher.
A fair sized earthquake placed in the right spot in LA or San Francisco will do either whole city in.

When we have constant 4.0's on a weekly basis over here it's only a matter of time.

That's crazy! I just went on google and it shows the daily amount of earthquakes in Cali, from yesterday and today alone quakes in the 3.8 to 4.1 magnitude.

From what the geologists say, we are due for an earthquale in the mid-south of the country along the mississippi river. It's called the Newmadrid fault line. It waas first recorded some 100 years ago.

Yep, waxing down the surfboard as I type.... nah, only kidding.

Civil defense presently blowing the warning sirens to alert of a tsunami expected to hit Hawaii around 11:30 this morning. No way of knowing how high the wave will be, but early indications show that it might be in the 1 meter vicinity. By all means, activities have been cancelled around the state until the wave comes and goes.

I'm situated in a non flood zone, so I'm good for now. Thanks for the warning, CC.

I bet it has something to do with those two huge ice shelfs that just broke off and displaced the ocean. Now I can blame it on you driving your motorcycle with the ca emissions removed.

People always say Floridians are crazy because we live with Hurricanes. Common, at least we get DAYS of warning to shelter and evacuate if necessary.

Earthquakes you get no warning.
Tsunamis you get a few hours of warning.
Tornados you get minutes of warning.
Blizzards you get a day maybe or warning?

You all living in those places are the crazy ones.

From what I have seen on the news, it looks like Chile took the quake pretty well. There is definitely widespead damage, and unfortunately deaths, but for an 8.8 (5th largest earthquake in history I heard?) they faired well since they are fairly used to EQs and build accordingly to the best of their ability.
In comparison, Haiti was MUCH worse with only a 7.0.

The channel I'm watching said that the wave to hit hawaii should only be a 2 foot surge. I'm sure that will do a fair amount of damage, but it hopefully shouldn't harm many people with the evacuations in place.

Im glad I don't have to live in fear of earthquakes, or tsunamis. We just get a bunch of tornadoes here, but most of them are harmless.

I wouldn't speak so quickly. The Gulf Coast has not had any major huricanes make landfall in a couple of years so I think we are due for some this year.

Much as we ever see in North Bama from hurricanes is some heavy rain, and maybe some flooding, but I live on top of a mountain so im safe.

Glad Kelly is OK. The Tsunami was a lot less than predicted and it looked like the authorities did a good job mobilizing all the agencies. I don`t like eartquakes. I lived in Marina CA for a year and a half when I was stationed at FT. Ord. The ground shook some at times and it was something I could live without. My son lives in Orange County CA and puts up with drought, rain with mud slides, and earthquakes. He does, most of the time, have great weather. I like Coastal Maine. So far we have had one real snow storm. I have been able to ride my bicycle half of January and almost all of February. Temps here have been in the high 30`s to 40. We are starting to see some buds on the trees, and I have seen several robins. The two blockbuster snow storms were south of us and East of us. We have had very little snow. Must be because I rebuilt our aging John Deere snowblower. I am waiting for the sand and salt to wash off the roads and then I will start riding again. There are several motorcyclists who have been riding quite regularly since January.

Here's some analogy on the Haitian quake Vs the Chile quake.
Chile probably has stricter building codes but it was a very deep quake.
They say they roughly equaled in size apparently because of the depth.
http://news.yahoo.com/video/world-15...again-18367591

Some of the damage pictures from Chile are simply bone chilling. All that happened in 90 seconds, or more likely the first few seconds of those 90.

Washington EQ are way different then CA's
I grew up in CA and if it was a 6 or under we were mostly worried if we spilled our beer!

6.5 + was cause for alert !!

But up here they feel much harder at a 5 and LOUDER. weird fault line. Not the rolly ones.

I am not too worried. You can't control them.

I just wish if I had these "feel the future dreams, it would be of winning the lottery" This EQ dream thing has happened a few times before. Quite shortly after, some big one hits somewhere. Maybe I am part DOG haha!!
The dream on Wednesday , it was the longest quake. I kept thinking MY god this is the longest quake ever. Too bad they are just random and vague.

Egads
90 seconds in any quake sounds terrifying!! So many lives disrupted.

Thank you all for your comments and concern. As it turned out, 4-5 ft tidal changes in the harbors were the extent of the tsunami. Although this one wasn't the killer wave they were expecting, I'm sure one of these days it will come as it has in the past. The civil defense agencies got a good workout of their systems.

Remember, mother nature was here long before we were, so learn to live with her moods and respect her power.

The all clear was signaled at about 2pm Hawaii time. A tense day, but very happy with the outcome.

Very well put Kim. We all have to live and deal with what nature throws at us whether it be earthquakes, huricanes, tornadoes, blizards, etc.

Also glad to hear that the big wave was much smaller than predicted. My family already lives in Wahiawa, so not much worry about them getting wet. My daughter called me and let me know about and I spent the next several hours glued to the tv.
