no steering dampner = broken thumb

Food for thought, I hadnt thought about this before. I had an off from locking up the front wheel in damp grass. Best I can tell, the bars snapping to one side broke my thumb. Time to add a dampener to my bike!

Time not to lock up the front wheel.

In conditions like we had at ACC this weekend with the run off areas soaking wet even looking at the front brake lever would cause it to lock up and most likely crash. A steering damper would not stop that from happening.

Sucks about the thumb it looked like it hurt but you didn't let it slow you down!

Next time your around I would take up Bruce on his offer to help, He knows those chassis pretty well and has helped me.

yeah... definitely a farkle for farkle's sake.

By the way,

Damper: adds velocity-dependent resistance to motion.
Dampener: adds moisture to something.

Two different things.

Im pretty convinced it was the handlebara snapping sideways that broke the thumb. A damper wiuld have slowed down the handlebars. Or.. using the rear brake instead certainly would have helped.

But my main thought is you normally think about steering dampers to stop tank slappers on the pavement. I had never given them a thought for when you go into the grass for whatever reason, and that the bars can break a thumb *before* you fall off the bike.

The amount of damping torque that a steering damper applies to the bars is very minimal compared to the amount of torque applied during a crash. Sure, it *would* slow down the bar turning to some extent to some extent because damping is being applied, you're not wrong. I think you're just overestimating the effectiveness of such a device.

If you want a damper, that's 100% your decision because it's your bike and we're just a bunch of strangers on the internet, but don't kid yourself: the solution here is to not lock up the front wheel and crash.

Sounds like you need to adjust your steering stops to leave enough room between the bars and the tank.

i have wheel weights on each side of my steering stop, to limit the steering,
i know for the r3 you can buy a plate that mounts to the steering stop to limit it, often wonderd why i cant find one for the 300.

As much as I prefer "damper" to "dampener" in this context, both are considered correct.
