Brake vs break (and other laughable misuses of words)

Which frequently misused homophones drive you crazy, make you roll or eyes, or make you chuckle?

This being a motorcycle forum, I'm in awe at the number of people who misuse brake and break.

Homophone lesson numero uno:
BRAKE - v. to slow down or stop a moving vehicle.
BRAKES - n. a device for slowing or stopping a moving vehicle, typically by applying pressure to the wheels.

BREAK - What you DON'T want to happen to your or your bike while riding it! So quit saying you "break" on the bike. If so, you should probably be posting in the "I crashed!!!" forum.

Sometimes I just can't restrain the teacher inside of me.

Their: "The guy was looking for their bike."

There: "The bike is over there."

They're: "They're really glad that they found the bike."

On the other hand, I need to learn better punctuation. Semi-colons and such.

like you pointed out brake and break are commonly seen in online motorcycle discussion. Another one is road and rode that gets misused in motorcycle discussion

Begging the question means "assuming the conclusion (of an argument)", a type of circular reasoning. This is an informal fallacy where the conclusion that one is attempting to prove is included in the initial premises of an argument, often in an indirect way that conceals this fact.

I was bad, I thought it was the Oatmeal when I first searched for the Alot. Dur de dur

Now see in my case its my lame tablet keyboard ever since the upgrade that has fouled my typing. It's almost impossible to hit the Shift key (and now they've switched the color to make it look like it is off when it is on). So my typing has suffered by losing capitalization and gaining spaces. Grrrr

discreet/discrete. Not a homophone but "irregardless" is one of my favorites. "I could care less" (when somebody means they don't care about something) makes me laugh too.

"Irregardless, I could care less if you were discrete about your indiscretions."

definitely/defiantly - People use defiantly instead of definitely and then I want to ask what they're so angry about

"bear with me"/"bare with me" - No I don't want to strip with you, thanks

"for all intents and purposes"/"for all intensive purposes" - So what about non-intensive purposes?

I have to resist being a smart ass when people use the wrong word...

Seriously. No kidding!
Sale is a noun.
Sell is a verb.

That's how I know which affect/effect to use. Affect is used as the action (verb) and effect is the thing (noun).

i think effect is actually both.

from the dictionary:
Quote:

ef·fect

verb
verb: effect; 3rd person present: effects; past tense: effected; past participle: effected; gerund or present participle: effecting
1.
cause (something) to happen; bring about.
"nature always effected a cure"
synonyms: achieve, accomplish, carry out, realize, manage, bring off, execute, conduct, engineer, perform, do, perpetrate, discharge, complete, consummate; More
unfortunately though everyone uses it when they mean affect.

Very nice! I sit corrected!

In the typical human usage of effect and affect, the general rule of noun vs verb is the way to go. Interesting to see the exception to the rule. I love words!

A bit off topic but "needs replaced" where the speaker drops the verb "to be" from the sentence. "That brake rotor needs replaced."
