Visor not shatterproof?

I just noticed that my helmet's visor says:
Quote:
NOT WARRANTED SHATTERPROOF
IF TINTED FOR DAYTIME USE ONLY
I like my eyeballs without bits of plastic in them. Should I pop off the visor and go with some shatterproof goggles instead? (Yeah, I know. That'd look dumb, plus bugs and debris hitting my face.) What does ninjette.org think?

As far as I know, the shields for motorcycle full face helmets are made of polycarbonate, just like most prescription glasses that are safe for sports practice.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate

Unless they are laminated, all will shatter with enough impact force.
If encountering such force, your neck and brain will be badly injured.

In order to pass Snell standard, the shield or visor must resist penetration of small road particles (stones, small metals, etc,) and to prove that is bombarded in a lab with sharp led pellets at a specified velocity.

https://www.health.ny.gov/prevention...le_helmets.htm

These shields offer great protection against road erosion during moderate crashes or falls.

Nothing is shatter proof, just resistant, what make is your helmet? major brand? Or a cheap POS ?

So what you're saying is, it isn't shatterproof, but if I do hit it hard enough to shatter, it'll be the least of my worries? And yeah, it's definitely polycarb.

Bilt. Both technically a major brand AND a cheap POS :P

Exactly what we are saying, if that happens that will be the least of your concerns.

I see most face shields go flying off in a hard impact crash.

Okay cool. Thanks so much for your input guys! I'll keep my visor on. Much appreciated. I'm happy I don't have to look dumb with a silly visorless helmet with goggle getup, and even dumber with a bloody nose caused by rocks hitting my face

Mine broke off. I ate and wore lots and lots of Florida sand.
You can see my faceshield hanging off in the first pic. The 2nd pic taken a few hours post-crash actually looks like it's still in good condition. It wasn't.

That's pretty gnarly. Glad you're okay. Got a crash thread somewhere?

I just noticed Ally's has a scorpion lid with the quick release. And look where it came off. I am a fan of these helmets but not a fan of those quick releases. They seem to come off too many times for my taste. When I got my new S&S lid, I made sure it didn't have a quick release visor.

Remember the rider that owned this helmet @adouglas? Check the scrapes on the visor attachment area. That visor was fully functional after the crash aside of the scratches in the viewport.

They test military eye pro by shooting It with a 12 gauge, it's not shatterproof, but will protect your eyes pretty well

Yeah, it's floating around here somewhere.

That's interesting. I've always had quick releases and have never had one come off before. But you're right, that's exactly what happened...it seemed to just come loose.

Edit: On the streets, there would have been more hazards to screw up my eyes...even on some areas on some tracks. I got lucky. Sandy dirt gives a little.
