Why won't they sell us a bike?

We've been to 3 dealers, and contacted 2 others, and they will not follow through on a 2015 Versys 650 LT.

We pretty much walked in and said

The only thing I can think is since it was my wife's money/bike I let her take lead.

We were even looking used at one place, and the guy walked away from us and never came back. I didn't realize it took so much work to buy a bike!

I hate dealers like that. I'm not going to work to give you my money yet most of them won't even get off their butt.

I usually pull up to the house of where I am buying a bike, had them money, load up and leave. This sucks.

does the conversation go something like "take my money!... but i want to pay this price which is below what you're offering me, but i say it's fair in the middle of summer when the same bike can easily be sold at a higher price. also i want to finance it, and i want 0 down with 0% interest... also 0 apr."

are you low balling them? this is prime time selling season, someone will pay reasonable $$$ for the bike. I remember when kawasaki revamped the 250 in 08, people were paying a hefty sum for a 3500 bike.

Low balling? We haven't even gotten a single dollar figure! I know what msrp is, because we researched it. Beyond that, nothing!

Same problem a while back trying to buy a new Fit with multiple Honda dealers. No quotes, no call backs, no interested sales people.

They obviously don't want your money. Help them out and take it elsewhere. Though it sounds like you're running out of other places to take it at this point...

Perhaps walk in with a wad of cash and wave it around? Like others have said, I can see them preferring to not sell you the bike super-cheap, when they should be able to sell it to someone else for full price. But if they're just ignoring you before numbers are even discussed, it sounds like a pretty horrible business. I was under the impression that it was the salesguy's job to sell things.

You even bring up numbers at all in your convo, like saying that you believe it should only cost around *blah* based off your estimates online. I'd just start by asking if they are capable of getting the bike in for you and then eventually work into price when they see your interested. But I do believe the whole walking away if they don't even have interest in doing their job when you are making it far easier on them by saying what you want and not having to poke around forever looking.

Several years back, after an arduous period of indecision on my part, I finally decided I was going to buy a Volks Passat. So I walked into the dealership where I had done a test drive a month or so before and waited to be pounced on. Nothing happened. Finally walked up to the reception desk and said I needed to talk to someone about buying a Passat. She said, sorry we don't have any to sell. And no other sales people came up to talk to me. None.

I spun a slow 360 looking at all the cars they had for sale. Then I left, never to return. BTW this would have been a cash transaction, so, well, beats the heck out of me what the problem was.

How weird is that? Just like your experience I have no explanation.

You know, when I have a choice, I now only do business with people/companies that appreciate the business I have to offer. If there is no respect or just plain courtesy, I move on to the next vendor. And I reciprocate by being loyal and understanding that they need to make some money on the transaction.

Life's too short to support jerks. Plus, there is a lot of good folks out there. You may have to try a couple to find them, but they most certainly are there.

They don't like cash transactions, they want to make money off the interest they get when they bone you with a loan. Don't tell them you're paying cash until after you've agreed on a price.
