Happy birthday to me

I low sided in a turn entering the highway but more details on that tomorrow.
That happened at 1:20 am and 30 minutes later I'm sitting in the diner down the street wondering if I should go to the hospital. The second I hit the ground I thought "sh*t why are my gloves in my bag and not on my hands. I have minor road rash on my hands and right side where my jacket slid up when I was sliding. My right knee, shoulder, hip and elbow hurt but nothing is broken. When my head hit the ground I saw a flash of white light and I have a barable headache. Should I go to the hospital? Pictures and more details on the accident in the morning.

Ugh, well, happy birthday. Sucks about the off.

Not a medical provider, so don't want to give bad advice. Head injuries are not something to ignore though. If you decide not to go to the ER tonight, at least head over to an urgent care first thing in the morning.

Take care of yourself.

Never mess around when it comes to possible head injury, I would definitely go to the hospital.

happy birthday!

unfortunate about the off, you should go to the hospital as you could have a head injury. From the sound of it a concussion is very possible. You should know if anything else is serious by feel but it's better to be safe than sorry, take care of yourself always

Sorry to hear, but if you hit your head you should definitely go RIGHT AWAY. The downside is not worth the risk.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Unfortunately my day was spent uncomfortably. I didn't go to the hospital because I didn't want to go if nothing was really wrong, I've waited hours in the ER for nothing in the past. My neck hurts a lot unless I'm laying down flat on my back so if that's still a probably I think I'll go in tomorrow. The half of my body that slid on the ground but I can ignore it most of the time. The road rash hurts like heck still but I'm keeping it clean.

Yes I was wearing it and I can confidently say that it saved my life. When I went down it was around 35 mph and the helmet made contact with the ground about 4 times hitting it and bouncing back up repeat let as I was sliding. If that was my bare head repeatedly smashing the ground... Well I don't really want to think about it.

I am so sorry about the accident, I hope the head is ok..update us. Happy Birthday?

I've had a couple of concussions (one was bad, I was out for a minute). What will happen, is that you get a few scans, and the doctor's direction to rest (and a bill..), and maybe a couple appointments with a neurologist who will ask you what your symptoms are and tell you to rest. From what I'm aware, they can't "heal" a concussion. Rest, rest, rest is all they say.

Concussions can be pretty serious. Look up the symptoms. I hope you are okay.

As for my ninja, the damage was just cosmetic. I'm going to need a new right turning light though so I'm lucky on that part. It took a good amount of persuading to start but I was able to ride it home fine.

that bike gained some serious character

Remember that your helmet is only meant to hit the ground once. The fact that your head hit the ground multiple times greatly increases your risk of a concussion to the point where it's more probable that you have one than don't

I know how it feels because something similar happened to me.
The noises of the helmet hitting the road that you feel from inside the helmet are awful !!!

The flash could be associated to temporary disturbance of the optic nerves or the retinas.
It may not be urgent, but if you can, see an ophthalmologist.

As for the possible concussion, it is important that someone observes your pupils for several days.
Different dilatation should make you go to an E.R. as soon as possible.

Wish that it is nothing to worry about.
Slow down a little for curves.

Good lord, at least you're able to walk among us still. I second the concussion thing. While there's nothing anyone can really do to help one heal, you might want to get a scan of your head and make sure there are no blood clots.

I smashed my head against a windshield during a car accident (no bikes involved) and got out of the car no problem. I didn't even have a headache or any symptoms. My brother, who is a doctor, yelled at me to go to the ER because of the blood clot scenario. I did and had no clots. But, he put the fear of God into me

Also, the road rash can cause an infection if it's not cleaned well enough. I know you said you've been keeping it clean but I'm not sure if that's something I'd screw around with either.

Your call! Anyway, glad you're still around!

D.

Update:

I work in a coffee shop in a hospital and I showed up to work today. Within the first 10 minutes I had over 15 doctors notice something wrong and told me to go to the ER so I finally caved in and went cause I should listen when multiple doctors say the same thing. They ended up X-raying basically every part of me.

The verdict:

Minor concussion (thank you helmet)
Bad whiplash
Minor road rash (which they said I did a decent job at cleaning)
Sprained my hip, right knee, right wrist, left pinky and left ring finger
And finally, a grade 1 ac separation, which is the best version of the separation of the collar bone from the shoulder blade, so I am now in a sling for some time

Luckily that's all that's wrong though thanks to all of my gear, but the moral of the story for me is to go to the hospital right away cause there's really no other way to know what's really wrong.

Thanks to everyone for their concern, I really appreciate it and hopefully I won't have another post in this thread....

How did the docs noticed something wrong? Was something physically wrong (facial features, etc) that gave it away?

I couldn't really lift my right arm and they saw I wasn't moving well and in pain while I was working. They also saw the bandaids in had on my hand was pretty swollen, which honestly I didn't even notice. I have to say, it does make me feel good to know doctors actually notice things

It only took 15 drs to drag you to the ER

Glad you're relatively ok. When you can type comfortably let us know what happened and what you think you did wrong. At least that way you and we can learn from all the suffering you just went through.

P.S. love your sig.

the bike actually looks kinda cool like that lol. custom decals.

sorry to hear about your crash. head injuries arent something to **** around with. there was that famous singer who was skiing a few years ago and hit her head and was walking and talking but then an hour later she died. from the head injury. I would always go to the hospital. just bring stuff to entertain you because they WILL keep you there for 10 hours before they tell you you have a concussion and are fine and free to go.

I'm glad you finally got proper treatment. A 35mph collision with the pavement is serious business and I'm very glad you weren't hurt more seriously. I have to agree with other posters, if you are injured enough to think about going to an ER you proabably should.

Okay so here's the story of what happened...

I rode with a friend who also had a motorcycle up to a movie theatre we've never been to so I used my phone's GPS since I just added a phone mount for trips where I don't know the way. We headed up I476 north with me leading and got there safe and sound. On the way back, around 1 am, my friend said he knew the way back and that he wanted to lead so I let him, keeping google maps on just in case. Naturally, you would think we would take I476 south to get back but he just rode right past it. And started turning, taking the ramp to I476 north. I kept looking at the sign to make sure I was reading it right, then looking back down at my phone to see if it was wrong, all the while not looking at the road, and my foolishness gets worse. I'm not too comfortable with where the horn button is on the ninja because I don't use it often so to tell my friend he was wrong I looked down at the handle bar to see where the horn was, after honking I finally looked at the road for the first time in a decent amount of seconds, I was already in the turn onto the highway. I started turning too late and I was going to fast and I guess I leaned more to try to correct this and next thing I know, I was sliding on the pavement.

AC joint injuries are no fun, I tore mine years ago when a friend encouraged me to try doing wheelies on a dirt bike the first day I'd ever ridden one.

Sounds like yours didn't tear though, so it should heal up pretty quickly.

Well need replacement turn signals? I replaced mine with aftermarket and still have 3 of them.

Glad you weren't hurt worse. I had a sever concussion before. Not to say I had a headache but got to watch out.

@BlueDragon - I've had a few close calls related to looking at my dash or GPS. I've taken to keeping my eyes up as much as possible and found a few little things that have help me. Maybe you know this stuff, or maybe it will be of help to you...
* If I think I may have forgotten to cancel my indicators I don't look at the dash. I just press the indicator cancel button again without taking my eyes off the road.
* As with the indicators - if I think my full beams are in the wrong state, I don't look, I just thumb the switch to where it should be.
* If I'm somewhere new and I'm feeling lost and a quick glance at the GPS doesn't help me out, I look for somewhere safe to pull over and check the map.
* I don't advise this but... I only look at my speedometer now when I'm approaching a speed camera. If you practise braking hard and you spend enough time riding you get a speed for how fast you are going and how long it takes to stop. If I can see the dangers and road up ahead and I know how quickly I can stop on this road surface then I don't need to check my speed on my dash.

I have a lot of respect for your ability to admit your stupid mistakes! Some people who crash fail to admit their mistakes and then they are doomed to repeat them or they give up riding "because it's too dangerous".

They are yours, just gotta find a way to get them to you. Perhaps I can make a game of it, get another PA member to meet me when I come down that's between us then get him to pass them to you, nice little meet ups.

Or just mail them, but wheres the fun in that lol.

That would be great! I would forever be in your debt

But I don't want to inconvenience anyone.... If I figure out how to fix my front wheel I'd be happy to meet someone somewhere along the way!

Sorry to hear about the lowsided birthday, but glad you came out of it fairly well and the bike wasn't done in.
What's wrong with the front wheel? If it's bent/damaged from the crash, you really shouldn't ride it until the bike gets a thorough once over by someone knowledgeable. Now isn't the time to push your luck any further LOL.

One of THE best investments the wife and I made were on a set of Sena communicators for our helmets. They are great little devices that allow you to bluetooth your phone, gps, music device, and other riders all at the same time. Definitely help to keep your eyes on the road since the gps chimes in with verbal directions, and you can speak to other riders without thinking of what gesture you need to perform that would get your point across. I'm a huge fan of these things now that I've experienced their value. Well worth the initial cost. Of course, everyone else would need to own one as well - or at least have a headset/bluetooth for their phone so you chat via cel signal.

Unfortunately not yet. I couldn't figure out why the front of the bike wasn't straight so i ended up taking it to a mechanic last week. They called me yesterday to tell me my handle bars were bent and that they were going to order new ones and replace them.
