Possible alternative for Factory Pro Blue Magic Shift Spring

I was wondering if the Blue Magic Shift Spring is worth the $30, or not. Or is there a cheap solution? Like maybe a spring from another model bike?

I had considered that.

I'm guessing the Factory Pro is a higher rate, so if I shim the existing spring it wouldn't increase the spring rate, it would just be preloaded so to speak.

I know some of the earlier Kawasaki used the same set up, like the KZ750 FOR example, if one of those have a higher rate than the Ninjette.

^^ correct, while a shim in the spring may help give a desired result - it is not apples to apples with replacing with higher rate spring. It would be nice to find a cheaper alternative. I suppose what we need to do is determine the rate of the stocker and get some dimensions.

Now if I cut the OEM spring, and then shim the difference, then we are in business.

Just like fork springs.

I installed the blue spring in my bike. Definitely stiffer, though it did loosen up a bit with use. Haven't had any missed shifts with it, I like it.

Would you happen to know how much stiffer the blue vs OEM spring was? Did it look different, like the thickness of the spring/wire diameter?

I don't suppose to have a micrometer handy?

My theory about this spring is it's from another model bike, and Factory Pro found the one, and is either repackaging, or have them made to that spec.

I know earlier models of Kawasaki used the same design, I'm guessing it's one of those.

Snake oil and "mechanic in a bottle" if you ask me.

I bought into the hype and figured I had to have one. After looking around, I found a forum member who sold me a used one for a few bucks to cover shipping. He mentioned not much a feel difference on his track 250r... said it was about the difference in feel between having a chain properly tensioned (feeling of blue spring) and having a chain with too much slop.

I paid him and he shipped the spring, and then we had a few back and forth PM about the feel of the spring at which point I lost my enthusiasm to install it due to his words.

Regardless, I still have this magic blue spring and I've never installed it as the bike has been down for installation of race cams, valve lash adjust, and several other overhaul type procedures.

If anyone needs any measurements, I have a full wealth of machinist tools in my possession and this spring is sitting in storage on the bench right next to my tapered roller steering stem bearings and other "this part will make the bike defy gravity" type things which I haven't had the time to install.

Let me know what you want to know.

Reason I cooperate is that I called the company and pretended to be an idiot, asked a few questions about variable valve timing advance and other preschool engine hot-rodding techniques regarding their products and was thoroughly dissatisfied with the knowledge of the salesman.

His pitch was "you won't understand this, and don't try, but send us money!"

If it's possible, could you measure both springs? I'm curious if there is a difference between the wire diameters, and number of coils.

So the "theory" behind this is somewhat logical. What you have with the shift spring, is the mechanism that holds a "follower pin" against the recesses of the shift star attached to the shift drum.

When you depress the shift lever and it turns the shift star/drum - the star pushes up against the "follower pin", compresses the spring at the height of the star point, and then follows the profile of the shift star.

The stiff spring provides a greater force against the "follower pin" as it rides along the shift star profile, which may allow for more positive feel of engagement and the additional force keep the pin against the profile of the star with less "slop".

The spring and pin's actual purpose is to provide the "hold" for the shift drum in neutral. As neutral on the star has a little valley at the peak of the "star point" between gears. A worn out/weak/whatever spring/pin/star makes neutral pretty difficult to find fyi.

It was significantly stiffer than stock, it took noticeably more force to shift. It also does feel very positive when engaging the new gear. It's not completely snake oil as there is a definite change, whether the change is "better" or not, I'm not sure. It's not worse though.

Okay so I just pulled the trigger on a used one on eBay for cheap, even got the whole assembly

neutral position bolt and pin, spring
off running 78 KZ400 with 20,000 miles
good used condition- no issues
P/N 92001-1037 (bolt)
P/N 92043-076 (pin)
P/N 92081-112 (spring)

All the part numbers are identical to the Ninjette, with the exception of the spring itself.

It's used, hopefully not too much, so now I wait til it arrives to find out if this is a cheaper alternative to the Blue Spring.

If there's a difference, I will then move on to ordering a new one, just in case the used one is too used, and might have lost its spring so to speak of.

My theory is Kawasaki switched to a lighter spring, same as they did with the clutch springs themselves, to make it easier to shift for beginners.

$30 is a lot for a pretty blue paint job. If you have the means to measure distance and force simultaneously, it's not difficult to determine the rate. Once you have the rate and size you want, start looking at McMaster Carr and work your way to Century and the other big spring manufacturers. Somebody out there probably has what you are looking for off the shelf. You may have to buy 10 or 20 or them. Sounds like a group buy.

Okay parts arrived today, so I tore into the usps priority mail box like I kid on Christmas morning.

Upon visual inspection between the springs, the newer one is a bit longer, the wire gauge is also a little thicker. Next was the pinch test, and the newer one is also a little bit stiffer, took more effort to compress.

Unfortunately no ride report due the rain, but I did install it, and I did notice a difference between the two just going for neutral to first.

Stay tuned for a ride report, and more information, measurements will have to wait til my new digital caliper arrives.

@corksil if you could take some measurements of the Blue Magic Spring, that would be appreciated.

Til then here's a picture, you can see the physical differences to see for yourself. OEM Ninjette on the left, part # 92081-1112 on the right.

Stock spring is weak and becomes compressed and your shifts at times become a false neutral, or once in a great while will pop out of gear on you as the spring didn't allow it to seat properly in the groove from the lack of pressure.
I have had to pull mine out and stretch it back out and can tell the difference immediately.
I keep wanting to get one but always seem to forget to pull the trigger on buying it.

i hope it works out well, your absolutely right that the cost of the factory pro spring and shipping is crazy - I think we still could get someone to measure one up for us and then we could pick springs in a range to suit rider preference

Get me the measurements of ether spring and I'll start looking at my parts suppliers for options. At a quick glance the tempered steel(made to resist heat) are about $2.50 each, some are sold individual and others in packs of 6-12. Just because someone out there found a spring that'll fit into 500 different bike doesn't mean it the perfect one for every bike. If someone feeds me a little info then I'll probably order several options and give them all a try.

I need the total uncompressed length, #of coils, wire thickness, ID and OD. Measurements can be in MM or Inch, I convert the values on my end.

By the way what's involved in changing the spring? Is it a 10 min job or something more involved?

I run these in my race bikes to prevent the back shifting from 6th to 5th. They seem to have reduced this phenomenon by about 90%. After you get used to the initial stiffness and added effort to shift you really don't notice it. Clunks a little bit more when shifting from neutral to 1st gear. All in all I would say this product does what it was designed for. You have to be the judge if its to pricey for your wallet.

spring rate, preloaded spring, effective spring length... what gives, you might ask ("the spring does!" -- shouted from the audience)

what is the difference? look at the end result. two numbers. force at full deflection. force at minimum deflection.

suppose you have a stock spring rate of 10n at 1mm deflection, and 100n at 10mm deflection. the spring is 10n/mm spring rate right?

suppose you swap to a fancy 12n/mm spring... at 1mm deflection, its 12n. at 10mm deflection, 120n.

suppose you have your 10n/mm spring preloaded by 2 mm. now at 1mm deflection, its actually 30n. and at 2 mm deflection, its 40n. at 10mm deflection, its 120n.

what would the difference be in feel? thats the real quantifier, right? how it feels? ("ungh! feels so good!!")

with the preloaded spring, the initial movement will be stiffer, but then ease into the same end-throw stiffness. with the higher spring rate, it would be easier at the beginning, but then get to the same stiffness at the end.

I love the way you think and that something I'll consider when I'm picking out various springs from the catalog. I took a quick glance at how the sting is used and held in the motor and was thinking some preload washers could be used to tune the different springs and find a preferred setup with only a few different ones purchased.

If simply pull my spring out at the shop while I'm here but I've been commuting via bicycle lately and don't have my ninja handy. Eventually I'll remember to pull it out and measure it if someone on here doesn't beat me to it.

yeah, good points - a curious note would be of course how much is the spring preloaded in resting state (if at all) and how much is maximum compression from the height of the shift star?

But the 12n/mm spring is much longer, so the preload is going to be greater.

length and spring rate are not related. and 12n/mm is a hypothetical spring. you probably mean the blue magic spring is longer. but since we dont know the spring rate, for all we know it could be the same rate as stock but slightly longer to force preload without a washer

Isn't there a way to calculate spring rate knowing the coil diameter, wire thickness and number of coils?
