Ninjette Member of the Month - November 2015 (SLOWn60 & tgold)

It's that time again! As always, to be on the ballot, you need to be in the top 10 of posts for the past month. I'm excluded, as is anyone who has won in the past 12 months. The current listing is always up here: top posters, under the quicklinks menu.

The criteria to win is up to the voter. Most helpful, least helpful, least annoying, most annoying, best avatar, it's open season. Winner gets to choose a privilege that I can reasonably fulfill. Larger avatar size? Want to auto-welcome newbies? More PM space? Special phrase under username in addition to custom user title? Skies the limit, as long as it doesn't cost anything, and I can code it in 8 minutes or less. The winners get all the same privileges as a group, so you get the benefit of whatever the earlier folks (and later folks) asked for as well.

Enjoy!

And that is why we would anchor the tree to the wall with fishing line.

This is my 10,000 post

I have never voted for myself in the many MOTM votes I have been in.

If you win it is because you are helpful and deserving.

Hi @Alex
Is there a list posted somewhere of all the special privileges?

As I view this forum often on my (i)phone, there are three features that would be of huge help towards easier viewing:

1 - I usually click on the "Last Post" button next to the members name that submitted it. the darn button is so small that often as not; I click on the member, not the last post! It would be great if you could make that button huge so it doesn't look like I'm stalking everyone!

2 - After I've read the last post; the only way I know to get back to the top of the page to go to the unread posts button is to madly scroll with my thumb! Would it be possible to add a "Back to top" button and save me from the inevitable ligature damage all that scrolling is inflicting? Paraglidingforum.com has an example.

3 - "# unread posts" button could also be significantly larger. I'm not really intending to admire my CP page despite how many times I seem to visit it!

I know I'm only offered one privilege and only if its drop dead easy for you to impliment so I'll leave it to you to decide which, if any might meet the bar.

One question; Now that I'm a MOTM, does the forum automatically post a welcome from me to new members? If so; am I able to edit the greeting? I ask because there was a welcome from me to a new member that I didn't post! I 100% endorse the welcome greeting but I'm curious where it came from!
Cheers

No - but if you go to the winners archive, there are links to every monthly thread. Most privilege requests are included right within.

There is a link called "top" in the footer that does this already, right?

Bit of a preference here. It's already bolded; I'm not sure I want to use a larger font there as well. It may be behaving better on desktops than smaller mobile screens.

Yes - your userID is put in a random array to auto-answer posts in the newbie section that aren't answered manually within a certain time period. The set of standard greetings is the same for everyone in the array. Though if you see one of yours, you should be able to edit it after the fact like any other post.

There is a link called "top" in the footer that does this already, right? Ahhh! I see it now!

Bit of a preference here. It's already bolded; I'm not sure I want to use a larger font there as well. It may be behaving better on desktops than smaller mobile screens. It does work better on a desktop with a mouse pointer. Big thumbs on a tiny phone screen: not so much. I understand though.

The set of standard greetings is the same for everyone in the array. Though if you see one of yours, you should be able to edit it after the fact like any other post Cool! I'll figure out something warm, fuzzy and welcoming then I'll go back and edit the post. If I read you right; future "Auto Greetings" will reflect my changes. Thanks!

As for my "privelege"; I'll take a rain cheque for now if I may; You prefer not to do one that I've suggested so I'll wait until I have another idea. I'm open to suggestions from others if there's a suggestion I'm not thinking of!
Cheers!

Not quite. Here is how Alex explained it before:

Quote:

2. (username)! Glad you found us...

I can add any number of additional phrases to choose from if you have any suggestions. I can't create a custom one for particular "welcomer" though, the full set is randomly picked by the user who welcomes (also picked randomly).
So, yes you can change it to whatever you want after it posts, but if you want your greeting to be part of the random selection Alex needs to add it to the list and then it'll be an option for all of us when we're randomly selected.

Gotcha! Thanks Teri! I understand now.
Cool feature though: a new member might slip through the cracks and feel a cold shoulder if no one were to respond! This gets their welcome off on the right foot!

Also bumps their post up to the top of the unread list giving their post a second chance to be seen. Only gets odd if you read their post and want to say howdy only to realize "you" already have.

Luckily, several members go through the new member section and respond to everyone who's posted in there so doubtful a new member would slip too deep into a crack.

That's exactly how I stumbled upon the feature! Just received my MOTM and went to welcome a new member but found I had already posted! I don't drink that much! Lol!

Do you filter your new member posts somehow? Like to ones you haven't posted in? The three I can find that "you" posted in only have the auto reply, not the usual greeting you give to new folks.

I don't think the auto reply happens all that often given how quick most of us are to say hi. It kicks in after half an hour or so, but usually someone is online throughout the day so the new threads are constantly being seen.

After 15 minutes is the time it kicks. I just look for unread posts
