Question My bike is stuck at 65 mph and won't go any faster?

Yesterday I was traveling on the HWY and couldn't get past 65mph and 9000rpm. I had the throttle fully rolled back in 6th gear. It just wouldn't go any faster and the rpms wouldn't move past 9000rpm. I was going against the wind, but don't understand why the bike wasn't climbing in RPMs at all. The winds were strong, but I was in a full tuck and it wasn't the worst gusts of wind I've experienced. An hour later, the winds died down and the bike was back to normal and I could travel faster than 65mph.

What happend?

Thanks,
David

Was it cold?

Mine does the same thing when it gets down below 20 F. If I'm on the freeway for more than 20 minutes at such low temperatures, the bike mysteriosly loses power and it does not run more than 60mph. I pull off to the side and let it idle a few minutes to warm up and then the zombies are gone.

The only explanation I have found is the cold. Even with the engine running at high RMP it is like the bike was never warmed up when you get moving at freeway speeds. THe wind chill wicks the heat away from the bike faster than it can produce it. I never have had the problem on a warm day or on side streets.

I wonder if the carbs are icing? I know some relatively modern but carbed bikes (Bonnevilles for example up until a year or two ago), had carb heaters to prevent the problem. I remember reading that ZRX1200's are subject to carb icing problems when ridden in very cold weather. Not sure I've heard about it on ninjettes yet, but I guess it's plausible.

That is what I think it is! THe cold air at high speed freezes up the carbs. I let it idle and the heat from the block radiates back up to the carbs and then it runs fine.

I didn't mention but it is usually hummid and foggy when it is at those temps, so moisture is probably getting into the carbs and freezing.

Are you hitting 65 mph right at 9000, or earlier?

Looks like UNTDAVID is in the Dallas area. It definitely wasn't cold here yesterday. I believe it was in the 80's. It had to have been the zombies.
