Faux Leather Protection?

So dont flame me for this but I cant find this information anywhere what sort of protection does faux leather offer, if any? I am sort of low on funds right now and cant afford a real leather jacket so while I am waiting for my Mesh gear to get in I was just wondering if anyone knows if faux leather will work in the meantime. (Obviously its better than a t-shirt)

Motorcycle leather jackets are generally 1.2-1.5mm leather to offer abrasion resistance. Fashion leather isn't thick at all so they're not good for abrasion resistance and faux leather would be even worse. Neither one would also have armor that motorcycle jackets would at the shoulders, elbows, and possibly back (unless they make faux leather motorcycle jackets which I've never seen).

Skin grafts aren't exactly cheap either if you were to have an accident and the faux leather failed. I have to agree with Cuong here.

You won't find any information in regards to protection because faux leather is meant as a cheap fashion alternative and for animal lovers.

Anything is better than a t-shirt, however, better does not = adequate in this case.

For real abrasion resistance, leather needs to be at least 1 mm thick. Even real leather at a fashion weight does little to protect you. In testing, denim, fashion weight leather and nylon materials protect for less than 5 feet of sliding before you hit skin. While faux leather wasn't tested, most faux leathers would be grouped with these non-technical fabrics and do little for you. I know that some faux leathers (those for industrial furniture uses) are made to be highly abrasion resistant, but the stuff used for clothing is usually of the pleather/leatherette variety - they are very light weight, which is a good thing for fashion - and include plastics. This weight used in oz./sq foot is such that even if real leather, they'd do nothing. More importantly, those plastics used will melt to your skin in a crash and make road rash worse. Not a good thing. Here is a link to the results I've found on abrasion resistance for different fabrics: Blog Entry: Which Material is Best for Gear. A quick highlight from the blog entry:

Distance of skid before road rash:

New 100% Cotton Denim Jeans -------------------- 3' 10"
Balistic Nylon ------------------------------------- 3' 10"
Leather, Lightweight, Nude Finish, 2.25 oz/sq. ft. --- 4' 3"
Leather, Fashion Weight, 1.75 oz/sq ft. ------------- 4' 4"
Two-year-old 100% Cotton Denim Jeans ------------ 4' 5"
440D Cordura Nylon ------------------------------- 18' 3"
Kevlar 29 Aramid Fiber, Style 713 ------------------ 22' 1"
Leather, Competition Weight, 3 oz/sq. ft. ---------- 86' 0"

I received a faux leather motorcycle jacket from as a gift from someone... It had decent armor inside, but I did a little test with a lighter and some of its exterior fabric. It instantly melted & went up in flames! It would probably do okay in a low speed crash because of the CE armor, but now I have it just set as a pretty mantle piece.

Consider purchasing used or mixed leather/kevlar fabrics. My jacket is a Joe Rocket Comet that has leather at all the parts where it is needed.
