Question Why no spark?

Motorcycle: 2008 Ninja 250

History: brother crashed the bike. I rode the bike to my friend's house w/no mechanical issues and we towed it back to my house later in the day. I've already replaced the stator cover since the old one was cracked and leaking.

And now, it won't start. Just cranks endlessly, like so (link).
I've narrowed it down to both spark plugs do not produce a spark when I'm testing them against a bolt that I have verified via test light to be a working ground.

It hasn't been sitting long enough to clog the pilot jets. In fact, I pulled the carbs last week and made sure of that.

There is plenty of gas in the tank, and I know gas is getting to the float bowls as I have drained them a few times after putting the tank in prime mode, so it's not a lack of gas.

Shoot. I even cleaned the air filter since I had plenty of time....

Battery has been kept on the tender most of the time. I connected it to a car battery just in case, and still no bueno.

Both ignition coils resistance measures out to 0.23 Ohms. Correct range is 0.21- 0.35, so that's fine.

And I've replaced both spark plugs just in case (and since they were a cheap way to eliminate another source of potential error).

Oh, and yes, all of the fuses in the fuse box work, as well as the 30A fuse on the starter relay, I've verified them all with the test light.

I was really hoping to be able to solve this on my own, but alas, I'm running out of ideas, so I'm open to help. Hopefully it's just something simple that I've overlooked. Any ideas?

(Thanks in advanced, I always appreciate any help & advice received! )

have you checked leads and caps ?

and the cdi ?

had a similar problem on my 750 Sabre and one of the cdi units were intermittent (though not sure if the 250 ninja has or not as not worked on one)

Have you checked your neutral switch connector and sidestand switch. The neutral switch sits behind the sprocket cover and the sidstand switch connector sits on the frame next to the top rear engine mount.

Which leads?

The spark plug caps? Is there a testing procedure for that?

Just went back to check. Neutral switch definitely works. Put it into 1st gear, and no bueno with the clutch let out. 1st with kickstand down and clutch in, no response either. And with the kill switch flipped in neutral, zilch.

I didn't even touch those connectors. Do you think it would be worth it to disconnect (ensure they are clean) and reconnect them?

With the other switches ruled out, the only other thing I can think of is the crankshaft sensor and the connectors which are located....guess where?

Man. Guess I'll be draining the oil again.... doh!

And loz, I do have the service manual, guess I need to look at it more closely to test the coils. I thought the resistance test was all for it....

Yeah i remember having problems with the caps these days they are more than just a way of connecting the coil to the spark plug

keep it simple.

what changed? your stator cover. whats responsible for timing inside your stator cover? stator pickup coil. open your stator cover up, check the stator with an ohm test. check the pickup coil is positioned correctly and then check it with an ohm test also. make sure they are both actually connected.

without that tiny little coil functioning correctly, no spark.

^ Whats mounted to the the cover, stator and pick up coil

Personally I would do a quick check of the B+'s, ground's and pick up coil resistance(100ohms) at the cdi connector.
Dont get lost looking at kick stand/clutch, Neutral switch by-passes all them.

Since you have the manual "16-32"

Winner winner chicken dinner!

I had no idea that the spark originated from the coil. I guess when I swapped covers, it got flipped to be facing the wrong way in the new cover

Now that it starts up, I found that the charging system is now problematic.
12.6v at key-off.
12.2v with bike running, idle or at 4k rpm, with headlight off.
12.2v with bike running, idle or at 4k rpm, with headlight on.

Pulled out the service manual again and went ahead and did some of the suggested tests. Passed the resistance test with flying colors, but failed the AC test.
Testing the 3 combination of pairs, each one is supposed to have around 40 VAC. I'm getting 11-12 on each one.

Anybody know anyone parting out an 08+ Ninja 250? I'm in the market for a stator

I've pulled the cover before while the bike was on a rear stand without draining the oil, and about a quart or so came out. At least it seemed like a quart....

This time I put the bike on the incline of my hill and put it on the rear stand so gravity would keep most of the oil back in the pan and a bit less than 1/4 quart or so came out from my estimations.
