Go Pro Hero 3: Advice Needed
Just picked up a Go Pro Hero 3 Silver Edition used.
Came with the camera, USB charger, and 8 GB SD card. I'm interested in vlogging and want to set it up like this: Best MotoVlog Setup: GoPro is King - YouTube I'm a little confused as to what exactly I need. I'd rather ask and look like a dumbass than try it out on my own and buy unnecessary parts. I know I need these: Helmet front mount: Helmet Front Mount - GoPro Official Store: Wearable Digital Cameras for Sports (anyone know if front mount above comes with curved adhesive tape? Looks like it does in the picture) 3.5mm mic adapter (any cheaper alternatives to buying the $20 on gopro website?) A mic Do I also need the skeleton housing found here: HERO3 Skeleton Housing Are there any cheaper (but still dependable) alternatives worth getting like this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Protective-H...item2a315978f0 Any input/tips/advice would be great! Thanks |

The helmet front mount comes with a curved 'helmet' base plate from GoPro, with the double-sided 3M tape already in place. The advantage to the 'helmet front' mount is that it comes with a couple 'straight' links (vs the ones that turn 90*) so you can move the camera away from your chinbar with one link vs two to do stuff like clear the visor if you orient the camera right side up. 'The Frame' mount is another option, but the only guys I've seen using those for video where the lens is open to the elements also happen to be sponsored by GoPro, so getting new cameras should the lens get scratched wouldn't be an issue for them. I'd definitely recommend the skeleton mount to keep the lens covered.
Another option with vlogging is to add voice audio after the ride, though that's not always as 'in the moment'. However, it can be a bit more scripted, and coherent. The only other advice I can give is to have a subject for your videos, keep them short, and stay on topic. Here's a great YouTube channel with a bunch of videos done by a RiderCoach who also happens to be a video production instructor... http://www.youtube.com/user/CaptCrashIdaho
