There was a cantilever bridge about 3 blocks away that was demo'd about 30 years ago. I'm guessing this was part of the gearbox that raised it as the teeth are not worn from continuous use and there was no heavy industry in the area that would've used such massive machinery..
Or...it's a piece of art as it not cast but made of 1'' steel plate with a few welds and gussets in places that would not be highly stressed. It's nice.

I live near that gear. Funny I never looked at it that close and I always assumed it was cast. I'll have to get off the bike and look closer next time!

In PA you got the best industrial archaeology in the world, I love that stuff.

We used to have a living industrial museum here in North Brooklyn but the developers took over and covered it with glass boxes. That gear is one of the few things left, for how long?

Yeah...everybody in greenpoint always had a job at some factory. Dirty, drunken, violent place but everybody had a job.

From a fellow EX New Yorker, Flushing to be more precise, but back in the day I've spent my fair share in Brooklyn, at Jr's, and Vitar ttransmissions, with that said,

Welcome, here are just a few things to think about,

1.Get trained and licensed MSF Courses

2.ALWAYS Wear protective gear -- ATGATT All The Gear, All The Time -- including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by a government agency.

3.ALWAYS Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs

4.ALWAYS Ride within your own skill limits

5.Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher rider courses, and advanced rider course A.R.C*

A.T.G.A.T.T. so I may ride another day. www.rockthegear.org
