I've had this for the past two years and really like it. 76 MPG and first gear is good for more than just getting going. Before I changed it I kept trying to shift into seventh gear.
5000 RPM = 50 MPH 6000 RPM = 60 MPH 7000 RPM = 70 MPH |

Running itmyself but the dealer did something and my fuel economy actually went DOWN. I usually got 48-50 MPG and now it 46-47... yeah, it's a small amount but it would probably have been drastic without the gearing change. I really need this looked at.

Chain, sprockets, and tires, oil change, and I asked 'em to diagnose a previous running condition (runs rich; smells gassy). They said "no abnormal running conditions found" even though there clearly was one and it got much worse.

I just finished installing a 15T/41T setup. So far I really like it. Shifting feels "right" to me now. I wanted to drop 1k RPM so I could get a bit more speed and stay between 5k and 6k (best MPG range) on my commute. This gearing gets me 55 at 5.5k RPM which is perfect for me. The guys that are into hypermiling the 250 recommend this gearing as well. I'll be going on a 100mile ride tomorrow and see what kind of mileage I get. I was getting high 60's/low 70's with original 14T/45T gearing.

How much would a 15/41 setup affect going uphill?

I cruised about 50 miles of the blue ridge parkway both directions yesterday, and found that to accelerate uphill at 5 grand in 6th gear was mediocre, but a downshift put me just enough higher in revs to accelerate reasonably well. If you are using it as a street bike, and fuel economy matters, you'll be happy with the result. It is still quite possible even with the taller gearing and a rider my size 250 lbs to ease along at 25 to 30 mph in 6th gear on flat land or very gentle up slopes. In my mind this is the gearing it should have come with from the factory. At 55 to 60 mph it pulls well enough to hold speed on most grades in this area, havent tested it on the interstate yet to see how it will fare there, but i have no reason to believe it will be disapppointing there either. Hope that helps. Try it youll like it!

I run 15/42 and your review is nearly spot on. I can add the freeway part. It does fine for the most part. I have only had issues going up grades against the wind, you simply have to downshift to accelerate or keep speed.

Thanks for the kind words Chris. I am pretty happy with the gearing, now to get the carb issues resolved, especially for cold weather.

Well I took the new 15T/41T gearing out for a good 130ish mile spin to check any MPG improvement. I got kind of pissed the last half because of a strong head wind that I figured would really mess up my mileage. Well my best MPG on original 14T/45T was 72.6. That was running 100% surface streets @ 40-50 MPH. The 15T/41T allowed me a bit faster MPH at same RPM. The first 1/2 of the ride was around 45 MPH and the last 1/2 was around 60 MPH. Even with the head wind on the last 1/2 I got an amazing 80.2 MPG! So I'm very happy with the new gearing

Well i am totally amazed at the fe numbers your getting. I am about 250 with gear and feel like i should be getting better than i am based on your experience. The best i have gotten is 70.6. Riding at 60 to 65 nets me about 63. Grrrr i am jealous. :-)

I've had the 15T front sprocket on my ninjette since way back. This thread just convinced me to order a 41T rear. I do mostly 50-60 mph commutes and this sounds about perfect.
Also, having to shift into 2nd while in my parking garage is pretty lame. |

I know what you mean sean. Being in 3rd or 4th by the time you clear an intersection after a red light is pretty lame too, but thats better than it was stock.

I get the same exact readings on my 15T/41T setup. A full Yosh exhaust and Jet Kit helps its responsiveness alot too.

Just got done with a ride after throwing on the 41T rear sprocket.
Damn. I love it! First actually feels useful now. Pulled into a parking lot and I didn't have to shift into the second to ride around. Buzziness is down across the board at the same speeds as before. I was still trying to shift to the last gear - but this time I actually found it: 6th. Surprised myself a few times, but it was part of getting used to it. Only took a few minutes and I adapted just fine. On paper, you do lose some acceleration, but I actually prefer WOT from 0-60 mph this way as I'm less focused on constantly shifting. But overall, everything is smooth smooth smooth. Acceleration feels smoother. Cruising feels smoother, and blipping the throttle while downshifting during engine braking is definitely smoother. I've been missing out! |
