The skyline drive "stroll" October 22, 2011

It's the time of the year, the leaves are changing and is gonna offer us a wonderful view of skyline!

The skyline drive "stroll" is gonna be on A Saturday, October 22nd.
Time: 10am
Meeting place is at Shell "10 South St # 1, Front Royal, VA" (It's more practical, so we can just gas-up and go strait to skyline )

We're planning to do the whole skyline that's approx 3 - 4 hours going 35mph - 45mph (of course we'll take breaks) (or unless you guys have something else in mind?)

Please bring your cold weather gear. According to weather.com the weather averages on that day is gonna be to 65 hi - 40 lo. ave of 60.

Also don't forget $10 to get in.

This really sucks ): I kinda want to risk it but then again... it's gonna be a long day of riding it's kinda scary... I'm gonna try to have someone vulcanize my tire for temporary use.

I hope you can make it kaiserz! I'm looking forward to this ride so much! I just hit a deer with my tahoe last night and I've been dealing with my insurance company since. I doubt that's gonna get in the way of the group ride but **** happens. The 250 is my main source of transpotation until the claims adjuster can access the damage and possibly get me a rental. The auto shop said they couldn't fit it in their schedule until at least monday.

I could swing by the shell station at the intersection on my way. When would you be looking to meet up there and head out to the main spot?

I just sent you a couple texts, according to my gps it takes about 40 minutes to get there from the intersection; so how does 9a.m. sound? The intersection is maybe 5-6minutes from my house so I can be there whenever is best for you.

I REALLY hate to do this, but gonna have to back out/down on this too. It's almost 1:30, I'd be waking up in under 4 hours (for 12-15 hours on the bike); I feel like my head's two sizes too large and my nose won't stop leaking. If nothing else that would make for a really messy ride.

Been looking forward to this for most of the month and even postponed two other events so I could make it but noOOoooo....

Have fun and be careful! Those dry leaves are slipperier than you'd think.

One part often overlooked is your neck and chin ... my trip starts in 44 degree temps at highway speeds that 24 degrees it doesn't take long to freeze exposed skin ^_^

Eat some food before you go, not a big meal but something, and if you stop also get a little food. This will force your core temperature up and restore some of your heat.

Be sure to bring food to nibble on and a place to store it throughout the day as well as beverages. If you forget no worry we can use my cases to store your food ...

If you see a biker pulled over do stop for them to make sure they are ok. In this weather you never know.

Finally got home...
It was fun. A little on the slow side with how crowded it was, but I expected as much. The views from Skyline drive were perfect...

I'll be sticking up a short ride report about it.

Skyline Drive Ride

Went to skyline drive for the first time on my motorcycle. Beautiful ride... and this is how it went!

Was on the road by 7:30 a.m. with my friend on his Bandit. We got some breakfast from Hardees and started the rather cold ride up I-95 to get to 66 so we could get to that gas station at the top of skyline. My GPS we were relying on started dieing about 30 minutes into the trip, so we immediately pulled over at a gas station and I scribbled down the rest of the turns/exits and taped the paper to my gas tank just in case the GPS died which it didn't... all that writing for nothing, but it's better to be prepared.

When we got to the gas station, we were greeted by this bunch:

My friend Drew on the left being a little timid about socializing :P
and live2ride, Honko, Novarusky (I think), and Burton in the pack of bikes to the right.
I was outside the frame risking my life to take this picture as I was hanging off a short wall so I could get them all in view.

After a few introductions, fillups, and restroom breaks, we were off to sit at the nearest red light. Me and my friend Drew being the big kids we are started revving our bikes in excitement. WE HAD FINALLY FINISHED THE TREK AND WERE READY FOR THE ADVENTURE THAT LIES AHEAD!!! Turns out there was a cop we didn't see near the intersection... good thing he didn't pay us any mind. Shortly after, we paid the fee at skyline drive's entrance and were riding in the clouds. It was a slow ride with all the traffic, but a pleasant one nonetheless with the views and smooth, curvy roads. ...and the tunnel... My friend on the bandit has a straight pipe and he decided to go nuts in the tunnel. I about jumped out of my skin.

tunnel + screaming inline4= deaf hoodadooda

Our first stop was right after the tunnel. It was so wonderful to stretch a bit and admire the scenery a little. Unfortunately, it was also the point were live2ride and Honko left us. Guess they were too good for us.
It is at this point that I learn burton likes to be prepared... and I'd be surprised if there was something he wasn't prepared for. Also, he has a really cool hat.

Fought traffic to get the obligatory bikes w/ scenic background shot. Turned out pretty good.

Some scenery:

Love the fresh air up there.

The four of us continued on up skyline making a couple stops here and there for taking pictures and stretching. Here's Novarosky (I think that's his username :P. sorry if I'm wrong). Really liked his jacket... I need a good one like that.

At one of those stops, some random guy asked if he could pose by my motorcycle. He tried to swing a leg over, but I was not going to let that happen... pose BY it, not on it.

Overall, I'm pleased to report this ride as a success. We'll have to do another ride like this for those who missed it. For those who came, thanks for the good time!

One last thing, if any of you thought my heated gear was cool or was jealous of it. Don't be, it started malfunctioning when me and my friend hit I64 going home. It went from no heat to some unknown setting between high and THE HEAT OF A THOUSAND SUNS. I was literally burning up on a cold day until I yanked the cord.

Good write up, Aaron. It was great to enjoy the views, of course the sun pop'd out right as Honko and I had to go . Anyway; it turned out to be an awesome day ntl. It was my first real group ride and even though it was slow paced, it was a lot of fun! I realized why Burton told me about 211 east out of skyline Dr; that road had tons of hairpin turns, some with gravel. No wonder there was the "High Risk Motorcycle Crash Area" sign just before I hit those twisties . Anyway, Right after the twisties I knew exactly where I was, right by the emporium in Sperryville. It actually took a good 20 minutes less to get home than it did to get to the meeting point. I hope everyone made it home safely; glad to hear you guys had fun on the rest of the ride.

I ended up taking 33 east on my way to Charlottesville and it also had some nice little stretches of road. Being my first group ride, I must say it feels pretty awesome traveling in a group of bikes

After all was said and done, aside from the 1 and a half hour break I took in Cville to hang out with some friends, I was on the bike or taking a break from being on the bike from 9 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. today. My groin and neck were not pleased when I finally got home and off the bike.
